A two-time CoSIDA Academic All-American, Young was voted the Southland Conference's 2017 Outdoor Track & Field Student-Athlete of the Year and was also the conference's Indoor Track & Field Student-Athlete of the Year in 2016 and was a three-time Southland Conference Spring Commissioner's Honor Roll selection. Young had a 4.0 grade point average as a graduate student after compiling a 3.83 GPA as a spring 2016 Southeastern graduate in kinesiology with a concentration in sports psychology. On the field, Young became the third four-time All-American in Southeastern history in 2017 after finishing second in the hammer throw at the NCAA Division I National Championships with a school-record throw of 241 feet, 8 inches. He also captured the Southland Conference championships in both the hammer throw and shot put and was named the conference's Outdoor Track & Field Athlete of the Year. In 2016, he became the first Lion to earn a Division I individual national championship by winning the 2016 indoor championship in the weight throw.
