James Carlin was an AP Little All-American at halfback for the Lions in 1936 and earned the American Progress Trophy for most valuable player in 1937. Following his exceptional college career, Carlin played professional baseball. He made it to the Major League level in 1941 with the Philadelphia Phillies. He was rated as one of the best passers and punters in the South in 1937 according to the LeSouvenir.
