HAMMOND, La. – Southeastern Louisiana placed a conference-high five players on the 2017 Preseason All-Southland Conference baseball squad voted on by the head coaches, the league office announced Monday.
Carson Crites and
Mac Sceroler earned first team honors while
Webb Bobo,
Brennan Breaud and
Kade Granier earned second team honors.
Crites, a senior second baseman from Amarillo, Texas, finished second on the Lions in 2016 with a .298 batting average, 13 doubles and eight home runs. He also picked up 13 stolen bases. Last season, Crites was a first team All-Conference selection and was named to the Southland's All-Tournament team.
Sceroler, a junior right-hander from Denham Springs, Louisiana, led the league with 10 wins last season. He also finished fourth with 2.25 ERA and 93 strikeouts. He was a first team All-Conference and All-Academic selection in addition to being named to the All-Tournament team in 2016.
Bobo, a senior outfielder from Prattville, Alabama, hit .283 with seven home runs and 42 RBIs. A clutch performer, his 20 2-out RBIs led the club. Bobo earned All-Conference, All-Tournament and All-Academic honors last season.
Breaud, a sophomore shortstop from Norco, Louisiana, was the 2016 Southland Conference Freshman of the Year in addition to being named a Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American. He hit .293 with seven doubles, one triple and one home run. Breaud scored a conference-leading 59 runs, drove in another 26 and led the team with 20 stolen bases.
Granier, a junior right-hander from Destrehan, Louisiana, was the 2016 Southland Conference Relief Pitcher of the Year. He pitched in a team-high 22 games, all in relief, while compiling a 5-1 record with seven saves and 1.42 ERA in 38 innings of work. Granier held opponents to a .213 batting average, walking 14 and striking out 34 batters. He also earned Southland All-Academic honors.
Ten of 13 Southland Conference schools are represented on the league's 2017 preseason All-Conference Baseball teams. Joining Southeastern with five players each are Lamar and Sam Houston State.
The Bearkats are the defending regular season and tournament champions and the winners of four of the last five regular season crowns. Sam Houston is the pre-season favorite, according to a recent poll of conference head coaches and sports information directors. Southeastern Louisiana, the regular-season champions in 2015, is tabbed for a second-place finish and Lamar was voted to finish third.
The two teams total 25 players, including a tie for the second team 3B slot between Lamar's Robin Adames and Sam Houston State's Andrew Fregia.
