Homers Power SLU to Series-Opening Victory at UIW

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Southeastern Louisiana University baseball team tied a program single-game record with seven home runs Thursday on its way to a series-opening victory, 9-3, over UIW in Southland Conference action at Sullivan Field, sponsored by H-E-B.

Southeastern (18-12, 9-4) homered in six of the game's nine innings against the Cardinals (15-15, 6-10 SLC), extending its winning streak to five consecutive games.

Following Dane Watts' one-out double in the first inning, Brody Capps launched the first of his two home runs in the game.

Connor Cuff led off the second with the first of his two home runs, extending the Lions' lead to 3-0.

Peyton Woods followed up Capps' one-out double in the third with a two-run shot down the right-field line. It was his third of the season. Two batters later, Cuff lined a solo shot to left. The opposite-field shot was his second of the game and eighth of the season.

Leading 5-0 entering the fourth, Alex Perry greeted UIW reliever Gus McKay with a solo homer to center. The leadoff shot was his sixth of the season.

Justin Williams extended the Lions' lead to 8-0 with a two-out, solo home run in the fifth. It was his fifth of the season.

A double off the center field wall brought in a pair of Cardinal runs in the fifth and a dropped fly ball led to an unearned run in the eighth.

Capps launched a solo shot in the ninth. It was his team-leading ninth of the season.

Truitt Webb (3-0) earned the win, allowing a pair of runs – both earned – in 5.0 innings pitched. He scattered seven hits and three walks, striking out three batters. Levi Shaffer earned his first collegiate save, working the final four innings. Emir Encalada (0-1) suffered the loss, allowing six runs – all earned – in 3.0 innings pitched.

Capps (3-for-5), Centanni (2-for-5), Cuff (2-for-4) and Williams (2-for-4) all produced multiple hits for the Lions.
