Lions, UNO Set To Renew Diamond Rivalry

First of four meetings between in-state foes in 2011

Jeff Harkensee is tied for the Southland Conference lead in RBI and is second in home runs
HAMMOND – The Southeastern Louisiana University baseball team returns to action on Tuesday when it resumes an in-state rivalry against UNO at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.

First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. The game can be heard in the Hammond area on KSLU-FM (90.9) and on the internet at www.LionSports.net.

Southeastern (13-7) and UNO (1-18) will meet on the diamond for the first time since the Lions claimed a 9-5 victory in Hammond on April 26, 2005. The resumption of the rivalry, that dates back to 1970, is the first of four meetings between the schools with Southeastern also hosting games on March 30 and April 27 before traveling to face the Privateers on May 3 in New Orleans.

The Lions snapped a three-game losing streak on Sunday in an 8-4 win over McNeese State. Southeastern, which swept UTSA in its Southland Conference opener March 11-13, fell to nationally-ranked Tulane before dropping the first two games to the Cowboys.

Justin Boudreaux leads Southeastern at the plate with a .398 batting average followed by Jonathan Pace (.390-1-16), who has hit safely in his last 17 games. Jeff Harkensee (.358-7-29), the team leader in both home runs and RBI, is next in hitting for the Lions followed by Brock Hebert (.333-1-10), Cass Hargis (.307-0-11), Cody Gougler (.303-1-11) and Josh Cryer (.288-1-9).

Redshirt freshman Matt Pittari (0-0, 1.76 ERA), a former Fontainebleau High product, will make his second career start for the Lions. The southpaw went 5.0 innings and fanned five in a no-decision against Sacred Heart on March 7.

UNO, which is making the transition from Division I to Division II, opened the season with a split against Southern University before falling to the Jaguars in the series finale on Feb. 20. That started a current 17-game losing streak for the Privateers, who have lost games to nationally-ranked opponents LSU, Wichita State and Tulane and games against Southland Conference foes Northwestern State, Stephen F. Austin and UT Arlington.

Nolan Church leads UNO at the plate with a .280 average, three home runs and 15 RBI. Chris Geronimo is next in hitting for the Privateers at .275.

Southpaw Robert Ormsbee (0-3, 12.79 ERA) is expected to start on the mound for UNO.
