Alex Young and
Stephen Cassingham added to their list of accomplishments on and off the track Thursday by being voted to the 10-member College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District 6 Men's Track & Field/Cross Country Team.
Young and Cassingham are now candidates for the CoSIDA Academic All-America team which will be released at a later date. They are also automatic selections to the Southland Conference All-Academic squad.
Young was named Academic All-District for the second straight year. The Nashville, Tennessee native became the fourth member of the Southeastern track program to be voted CoSIDA Academic All-America in 2016. He was also named the Southland's Men's Indoor Track & Field Student-Athlete of the Year and to the conference's All-Academic team. He is also a two-time Southland Conference Spring Commissioner's Honor Roll selection. He currently has a 4.0 grade point average as a graduate student after compiling a 3.83 GPA as a spring 2016 Southeastern graduate in kinesiology with a concentration in sports psychology.
Cassingham, a New Orleans native, was one of three student-athletes to be honored last month for having the highest GPA in the Southeastern athletics department among graduating seniors, compiling a 3.94 GPA in mathematics. He was also named to the Fall 2016 Southeastern President's List, is a seven-time Southland Conference Commissioner's Honor Roll selection and served as the treasurer of Southeastern's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee
"We have had multiple conference champions, all-region selections and All-Americans," Southeastern head coach
Sean Brady said. "However, to be named to the Academic All-District team is truly an honor. It takes a great deal of sacrifice to just be a Division I student-athlete. These two guys have done something truly special. They are great examples of the athletic department's mission statement - committed to excellence in the classroom, in the community and in competition."
Young, who is currently competing in the hammer throw and shot put at the NCAA Division I East Preliminaries, became the fourth Lion to be named the Southland Conference's Male Outdoor Track and Field Athlete of the Year earlier this this month. He was also named first-team All-Conference in the hammer throw and shot put after winning both at the league championships, breaking the meet's hammer record in the process. He also placed fourth in the discus in being named the meet's high-point scorer.
Young was the USTFCCCA Division I Men's National Athlete of the Week for March 28 after breaking the school's hammer throw record, a mark he went on to eclipse the following week. He was also named the Southland's Men's Athlete of the Week three times during the outdoor season.
As a junior in 2016, Young became the first Lion to win a Division I national championship after winning the indoor weight throw title. He is a three-time USTFCCCA All-American and a 10-time All-Southland selection in his three years at Southeastern. He was also named the Newcomer of the Year by both the Southland and the Louisiana Sports Writers Association as well as All-Louisiana after transferring from Gardner-Webb University in 2015.
Cassingham was 36
th in the 5,000 meters at the Southland Conference Championships. He had three top-10 finishes in the 5,000 during the outdoor season, including a third at the Mississippi College Invite. He was also fourth in the 3,000 at the Ole Miss Classic.
Cassingham had two sixth-place finishes in the 3,000 during the indoor season and a pair of top-20 finishes in 2016 cross country campaign. He beat his career-best 8K time by more than 31 seconds in taking 67th at the Southland Championships and had the fourth-fastest 8K relay time at the New Orleans Invitational.
