Onyah Favour added African champion in three disciplines to her 2025 honors after winning a trio of golds at the recent African U-20 Athletics Championships at the MKO Abiola Sports Complex.
An All-American following her performance at the NCAA Division I Outdoor National Championships, Favour continued her run of good form on the international level in the continental championships.
Representing her home nation of Nigeria on home soil, Favour cruised to the gold medal in the 400-meter dash, stopping the clock in the final in 52.47 seconds, half a second faster than second place.
Not long after, she added a second African championship to her mantle as part of Nigeria's women's 4x400-meter relay team, which blasted its competition as she crossed the line, running in the anchor position, with a time of 3:37.02, winning the gold by seven seconds.
The third gold medal came in her second relay competition as she again ran the anchor leg in the mixed 4x400-meter relay. Locked in a tight race, a stumble in the backstretch by her nearest competitor cleared the path for her to glide to another top of the podium finish for Nigeria, stopping the clock in 3:22.07, more than six seconds ahead of second place.
"What a year and what an ambassador for Southeastern on the American and world stage," said
Damion Jeanpiere, SLU track & field assistant coach for long sprints. "It's been a long year and preparing for the long season is part of the vision. That's track & field. These elite gold medals are the products of vision, faith, and belief. Favour is not done yet. We are still in late season and preparing for the upcoming Nigerian National Championships this week and the World Championships in September."
Favour adds the three African Championships to her 2025 season at Southeastern where she earned All-American Second Team, All-Southland Conference Second Team, and All-Louisiana Third Team honors, all in the outdoor 400-meter dash. She's currently rated as Nigeria's third-best runner in the discipline and the country's 24
th-best athlete overall. Favour currently sits inside the top-200 400-meter runners in the world, currently ranked 165
th in the discipline.
