2017 Outdoor: Received Southeastern Male Athlete of the Year accolades for the second time in his career, becoming just the fifth student-athlete in school history to be named Athlete of the Year multiple times … Was the fifth men’s track and field student-athlete to claim SLU Athlete of the Year honors … Named the All-Louisiana Field Athlete of the Year by the Louisiana Sports Writer’s Association … Had the top hammer throw in the state and the second-best shot put … Voted to the CoSIDA Academic All-America second team … Among four members of the Southeastern track and field program to be named to the CoSIDA squad, joining Gabriella Dahlgren (1997), Nadia Lamb (1997) and Janice Ezegbunam (2004), and the first to be selected twice. … Named USTFCCCA All-Academic ... Named the Southland Conference Outdoor Track and Field Student-Athlete of the Year … Made the conference All-Academic team for the second time … Earned first-team USTFCCCA All-America honors … One of three Lion four-time All-Americans, joining Devin King and Donald Dykes … Rallied to finish second in the hammer throw at the NCAA Division I National Championships with a school-record throw of 241-08 … Was 15th going into his third throw and sixth heading into final attempt … Unleashed a first-place throw of 233 feet, 1 inch at the NCAA East Preliminaries in qualifying for the Division I National Championships … Also competed in the shot put … Named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District 6 team for the second straight year … Became the fourth Lion to be named the Southland Conference’s Male Outdoor Track and Field Athlete of the Year, joining Kalphys Kemboi (2007), Henry Rop (2009) and Adonson Shallow (2010) … Was also named first-team All-Conference in both the hammer throw and shot put after winning both at the league championships … Captured the hammer with a throw of 228-4, breaking the meet record of 222-02.5 set by former Southeastern teammate Jonathan Kinchen in 2015 … Won the shot put at 57-11.75 … Also placed fourth in the discus at 167-1 in being named the meet’s high scorer with 25 points … Was named the Southland Conference Men’s Athlete of the Week for the third time in 2017 after breaking the Ole Miss Track & Field Complex hammer throw record with a mark of 234-9.5 at the Ole Miss Classic … Received honorable mention conference athlete of the week recognition after taking first in the hammer with a mark of 234-2 at the LSU Alumni Gold … Placed second in the shot put (57-2) and fourth in the discus (167-5) at the South Alabama Invitational … Repeated as the Southland Conference Men’s Athlete of the Week after breaking the Lions’ hammer throw record for the second straight week in taking first at the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays with a mark of 235-05 …That mark is currently third in the nation and came against a field that featured nine of the top 30 marks in the country this season, including four of the top seven … Became just the third Lion to receive USTFCCCA Division I Men’s National Athlete of the Week honors after shattering the school’s record in the hammer throw by 11 feet, 7 inches in winning with a mark of 233-09 on his final attempt at the Hurricane Collegiate Invitational … Was also the Southland Conference Men’s Athlete of the Week … Went on to finish third in the shot put with a mark of 58-01.25, the second-best in the Southland and 33rd-best nationally this season … Also was 10th in the discus at 151-08 … Took second in the shot put at the Louisiana Classic at 55-11.25.
2016 Outdoor: Redshirted the season… Named to the 2016 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-America first team and to the CoSIDA All-District 6 Men’s Track & Field/Cross Country Team… Also selected to the Southland Conference All-Academic team and to the Southland Spring Commissioner’s Honor Roll.
2016 Indoor: Became school’s first Division I champion after throwing school- and Birmingham CrossPlex-record 78-01 on final attempt at NCAA Indoor National Championships … Had set school record with throws of 74-1.75 on his fourth and fifth attempts… Earned first-team All-America honors for the performance… Named Southland Conference Men’s Indoor Track & Field Student Athlete of the Year with a 3.812 grade point average in Fitness and Human Performance … Recorded nine wins and finished third or higher in every meet in 2016… Was named first-team All-Southland Conference in both the weight throw and shot put… Threw 71-11.50 inches on his second to last attempt to break his own meet record of 69-11.75 in repeating as the weight throw champion at the Southland Championships... Became the first Lion male athlete since shot-putter Adonson Shallow (2009-10) to repeat as an indoor conference champion in an event… Also captured the shot put at 56-5.25… Went on to win the shot put (55-7.5) at the LSU Twilight… Was named the Southland Field Athlete of the Week after shattering the school weight throw record in winning the KMS Invitational with a mark of 74-1… Mark broke the record of 73-03.13 set by Shallow in 2010 and is the fourth-best throw in the nation in 2016… Also captured the shot put for his third straight meet at 56-10.75… The victories capped a busy weekend for Young who also placed third in the weight throw at the McNeese Indoor Invite with a mark of 65-5.5… Set a personal best in winning the shot put at 59-1.25 at the New Mexico Cherry & Silver… Captured the shot put (55-1) and placed second in the weight throw (65-8.75) at the LSU Bayou Bengal… Opened the season with a win in the weight throw (70-8) while finishing second in the shot put (55-1) at the LSU Purple Tiger.
2015 Outdoor: Young earned second-team All-America honors after placing 10th in the hammer throw with a personal-best 218-2 at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Championships ... Was also named the LSWA All-Louisiana and the Southland Conference Newcomer of the Year … Qualified sixth in the hammer ( 216-4) while also finishing 30th in the shot put (57-8.5) at the NCAA East Preliminaries … Had three top-two finishes at the Southland Conference Championships, winning the shot put with a personal-best 58-10 while taking second in the hammer (212-2) and discus (personal-best 176-1) … Finished second in the shot put (55-4.25) and hammer (206-8) and third in the discus (168-7) at the J Fred Duckett-Rice Twilight … Brought home a pair of fourths in the shot put (54-6) and hammer (208-6) from the LSU Alumni Gold … Captured first in the shot put (54-5.25), second in the hammer (204-11) and third in the discus (147-0) at the McNeese Springtime Classic … Took a pair of wins in the shot put (54-1.25) and hammer (206-5) and a fourth in the discus (158-4) at the LSU Battle on the Bayou … Was third in the hammer (209-3) at the Bobcat Invitational … Placed 14th in the hammer (188-9) at the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays … Placed fifth in the hammer (198-9) and 12th in the discus (164-2) at the Alabama Relays.
2015 Indoor: Closed indoor season with a 15th-place finish in the weight throw at the NCAA Division I Indoor Championships … Won the weight throw with a personal-best 70-10.5 at the LSU Twilight … Captured the Southland Conference championship in the weight throw (69-11.75) while taking second in the shot put (52-2.75) … Swept the weight throw (68-5.75) and shot put (53-9.75) at the McNeese State Invite … Was second in the shot put (53-10.5) and weight throw (65-6.25) at the UAB Vulcan Invite … Won the hammer throw (68-9.75) and was fourth in the shot put (56-5.75) at the Leonard Hilton Memorial … Opened his Southeastern career by winning the weight throw (66-1) and taking second in the shot put (54-4.75) at the LSU Invitational.
Prior to Southeastern: Holds the record at George Washington University in the weight throw, shot put and discus…Two-time Big South weight throw and hammer champion … Was a four-time member of the Big South Honor Roll…Was a member of the 2013 US Pan Am Junior Championships Team…A national qualifier for both indoor and outdoor hammer throw.
High School: Was a member of the track and field and football squads at Lavergne High School…Was a three-year letter winner on both teams…Was a 3A State Champion in the shot put and holds the school record in the same event…Was MVP his senior year … Was a member of the National Honors Society … Also competed for the Steel Throwers Club for coach Jim Brown.
Personal: Born in Nashville, Tennessee … Son of Stefanie Young …Has one sibling, Avrion…Enjoys fishing, video games and remote-controlled cars, planes and helicopters … Majoring … Graduated in spring 2016 with a 3.83 GPA in kinesiology with concentration in sports psychology ... Currently has a 3.33 GPA as a graduate student … Finished third in the hammer throw at the IX NACAC U23 Championships in July 2016 ... Placed 13th in the hammer throw at the 2016 U.S. Olympic Track & Field Trials … Won the weight throw at the 2017 USATF Indoor National Championships with a personal-best 78-9.75 … Captured the hammer throw at the 2017 USATF Outdoor Championships with a career-best 241-11 … First Lion selected to compete for the United States in the 2017 IAAF World Championships in London, England.
