Lions 2nd Heading Into Final Round of Championships

MCKINNEY, Texas – The Southeastern Louisiana men's golf team remained in the hunt for the Southland Conference Championships on a windy day Tuesday at the Dye Course at Stonebridge Ranch Country Club.

Scores rose on a day when the winds were blowing in the 20s. Southeastern, the first-round leader, slipped to second with a second round 28-over-par 316 and is at 35-over 611 heading into Wednesday's final round. The Lions, trying to win their first title since 2013 and fifth overall, are three shots behind reigning tournament champion McNeese, which shot an 18-over 306 and is at 32-over 608.

Nicholls is third at 618 and is followed by Stephen F. Austin (620), Sam Houston State (621), Central Arkansas (628), Houston Baptist (628), Abilene Christian (648), New Orleans (667) and Incarnate Word (678).

"It was unreal," Southeastern head coach Jake Narro said of the wind. "The course already was quite challenging and then we had 25-mile-per-hour winds. "And they may go up to 30 tomorrow. It is wide open and we're in good shape. I'm happy. We accomplished our goal of wanting to have a chance on the last day and we have a real chance."

Senior James Anstiss moved from first to fourth after an 8-over 80 and is now at 6-over 150 for the tournament. He trails co-leaders Albert Badosa-Soler of Nicholls and Blake Elliott of McNeese, both at 3-over 147, and Houston Baptist's Val Almendarez, who is at 4-over 148.

Senior Paul Obermann also shot an 8-over 80 to slip four spots to eighth at 9-over 153. Sophomore Joris Etlin is tied with Houston Baptist's Carlos Trevino and Nicholls' Josh Fullilove for 11th at 11-over 155 following a 6-over 78. Sophomore William Meyers also carded a 6-over 78 and is in a five-way tie along with senior Gustavo Leon for 14th at 12-over 156. Leon shot a 9-over 81 on the round.

The tournament concludes Wednesday with tee times starting at 7:30 a.m. The Southeastern golfers are scheduled to tee off between 9:45 and 10:21 a.m. Live stats, provided by the Southland, will be accessible on the Southeastern men's golf schedule page at www.LionSports.net.

The winner of the conference championships receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Regionals. The individual medalist also receives an automatic bid.

Etlin led the Lions with four birdies, on the par-5 third, par-4 ninth, par-4 10th and par-5 16th. Meyers birdied the par-5 seventh, the par-3 12th and the 16th. Anstiss also birdied the 16th while Obermann birdied the third and Leon the ninth.
