Lions Face South Alabama, Seton Hall, Troy in Cox Diamond Invitational

PENSACOLA, Fla. – Southeastern Louisiana wraps up an eight-game road trip this weekend at Blue Wahoos Stadium in the Cox Diamond Invitational.
 
The Lions (4-4) face South Alabama (5-3) at 6 p.m. Friday, Seton Hall (3-4) at 11 a.m. Saturday and Troy (5-3) at 3 p.m. Sunday in the round-robin event. The tournament will be played at the home of the Pensacola Blue Wahoos, the Cincinnati Reds' Double-A affiliate, recently ranked as the 19th-best ballpark in all of the minor leagues by Baseball America.
 
Southeastern's games in the Cox Diamond Invitational can be heard in the Hammond, Louisiana, area on KSLU 90.9 FM, online and through the TuneIn Radio app (search for KSLU). Fans can also keep up with the games through live statistics or by following SLUathletics on Twitter.
 
Saturday's game against Seton Hall will be televised by Cox Sports Television (Charter 324 / 815 HD). Outside CST's coverage area only, the game is available on ESPN3, WatchESPN.com and the WatchESPN app. ESPN3 is also available on Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, Sling TV, Chromecast and Roku. The game will be available exclusively on CST in certain markets [link].
 
Ticket sales for the Cox Diamond Invitational are being handled through the Blue Wahoos office, but links to purchase tickets online, in addition to audio, video and stats, are available on the baseball schedule page at www.LionSports.net.
 
Southeastern dropped a pair of close games Tuesday and Wednesday in Nashville, Tennessee, at No. 10-ranked Vanderbilt.
 
Derrick Mount (.348), Drew Avans (.346) and Taylor Schwaner (.333) lead Southeastern at the plate. Ryan Byers, Carson Crites, Mount, Scottie Sanders and Schwaner have each homered. Schwaner, a junior from New Orleans, owns a team-best nine RBIs and four stolen bases. The Lions are hitting .238 as a team, with 16 doubles, two triples, five home runs and 16 stolen bases.

Southeastern's pitching staff enters the series with a 5.64 ERA, fanning 58 batters through 67 innings of work. Opponents are hitting .274 off Southeastern pitching.

Friday the Lions will send junior right-hander Mac Sceroler (2-0, 3.27) to the mound opposite South Alabama senior righty Randy Bell (0-1, 3.46).
 
Sophomore right-hander Corey Gaconi (0-0, 7.20) is slated to get the starting nod Saturday versus Seton Hall sophomore left-hander Cullen Dana (0-1, 4.22).

Southeastern has not announced a starting pitcher for Sunday's game against Troy. The Trojans are slated to send senior righty Houston Mabray (1-0, 0.77) to the mound against the Lions.
 
South Alabama defeated Southland Conference-foe New Orleans, 10-7, Tuesday in Mobile, Alabama.
 
Eddie Paparella (.481), Will Luft (.400) and Wells Davis (.400) lead the Jaguars at the plate. Adam Wolfe owns a team-high three home runs, while Paparella (12), Davis (11) and Luft (10) all have double-digit RBI totals. Dylan Hardy and Travis Swaggerty have both stolen a team-best four bases.
 
South Alabama is hitting .338 as a team, with 17 doubles, five triples, 10 home runs and 15 stolen bases. The Jaguar pitching staff enters the series with a 4.30 ERA, fanning 71 batters through 69 innings of work. Opponents are hitting .253 off South Alabama pitching.
 
Seton Hall won its final game at the Tony Gwynn Classic in San Diego, California, this past weekend. The Pirates fell to Tennessee, 12-5, and Oregon, 1-0, before defeating host San Diego State, 10-5, Sunday.
 
Joe Poduslenko (.500), Mike Caputo (.346), Al Molina (.323) and Jackson Martin (.308) lead the Pirates at the plate. Poduslenko also leads the club in home runs (2), RBIs (9) and stolen bases (2). Seton Hall is hitting .290 as a team, with 14 doubles, two triples, five home runs and six stolen bases.
 
Last season, the Pirates led the nation with 183 stolen bases. Southeastern finished sixth in the nation with 113 steals.
 
Seton Hall's pitching staff enters the series with a 6.17 ERA, fanning 53 batters through 58.1 innings of work. Opponents are hitting .283 off Pirate pitching.

Troy defeated rival UAB, 4-2, Tuesday at Regions Field in Birmingham, Alabama.
 
Brandon Lockridge (.361) leads the Trojans at the plate. Brody Binder and Chase Smartt have each homered twice, while Binder and Matt Sanders have each driven in a team-high six this season. Steven Whitaker leads the squad with seven stolen bases. Troy is hitting .222 as a team, with 11 doubles, one triple, six home runs and 13 stolen bases.
 
The Trojans' pitching staff enters the series with a 3.14 ERA, fanning 77 batters through 77.1 innings of work. Opponents are hitting .244 off Troy pitching.

Southeastern returns home to host West Virginia in a pair of midweek contests Tuesday and Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field. Wednesday's game is the annual Pack the Pat game with the first 300 students through the gates receiving free Chick-Fil-A and a Pack the Pat t-shirt.
