Mobile, Alabama – The Southeastern Louisiana track and field teams came home with top-three team finishes after competing in the Jaguar Opener on Friday and Saturday. This two-day event, hosted by the University of South Alabama, was Southeastern's first outdoor competition of the 2015 season.
On Friday, the Lions and Lady Lions kicked off the weekend's events with three top finishes. Sophomore
Collin Rowland earned a first place finish in the men's javelin event (64.17m), as senior
Derek Hampton finished close behind in third (59.24m). Later that day, junior
Sharon Ann Ourso came in second in the women's pole vault with a height of 3.76 meters.
Saturday's events proved to be even more successful for Southeastern, as four first-place finishes were recorded.
On the women's side, the 4x100 meter relay team of
Vanessa Williams,
Shanetria Thomas,
Daijah Washington, and
Kaelynn Smith won the event with a combined time of 4:25.53. Junior
Misha Frazier placed first in the women's hammer throw, with a distance of 52.50 meters.
Sophomore
Bayleigh Butler came in second in the women's 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:12.15, while junior Nakiya Smith also came in second in the 100-meter dash (12.25). Senior
Ikea Kaufman also earned points for the Lady Lions with her third place finish in the women's high jump (1.59m).
On the men's side, the Lions swept the men's high jump event. Senior
Clarence Robinson placed first (2.04m), while
Kadarius Williams (1.94m) and
Devin King (J4.80m) came in second and third, respectively.
Junior
Andre Colbrook came in first in the men's 600-meter relay with a time of 1:19.64, while junior
Ashley Riley finished close behind in second, with a time of 1:20.76.
The men's 4x100 meter relay team and the 1600-sprint medley team both recorded second place finishes. In the 4x100, Ken Breland,
Kadarius Williams,
Raheem Brown, and
Dillon Brumfield combined for a time of 42.23.
Billy Minnifield, Brumfield,
Ashley Riley, and Colbrook combined for 3:30.39 in the sprint medley.
Brown also placed second in the men's 300-meter dash (34.85), while Breland came in third in the 100-meter dash (11.06).
The group of Southeastern male throwers continued their command of the discus event, as
Brett Olsen (51.21m) and
Jonathan Kinchen (46.58m) placed second and third, respectively. Kinchen also placed second in the men's hammer event with a toss of 61.71 meters.
Also earning points on the men's side were Dwayne Woodard (3
rd, 400-meter hurdles, 59.49) and
Joseph Edwards (3
rd, 1500 meter run, 4:12.84).
The Lion and Lady Lions will continue their outdoor season in two weeks at the Alabama Relays, hosted by the University of Alabama.
