HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana women's basketball team will look to keep its postseason hopes alive on Thursday, when it travels to Natchitoches for a 6:30 p.m. league contest versus Northwestern State at Prather Coliseum.
The game between the Lady Lions (7-18, 3-11 Southland) and the host Lady Demons (14-12, 9-6 Southland) will be broadcast live in the Hammond area on KSLU-FM (90.9) and on the Internet at
www.LionSports.net, where live stats and video provided by host Northwestern State will also be available.
If the season ended today, Southeastern would be on the outside looking in as far as the postseason is concerned. With four regular season games remaining, the Lady Lions are two games behind Houston Baptist and Sam Houston State for the eighth and final spot in next month's league tournament, scheduled for March 12-15 at the Merrell Center in Katy, Texas.
SLU had its losing streak extended to six games on Saturday, when it dropped an 83-65 decision to Abilene Christian in the University Center. In the loss, freshman guard
Taylin Underwood poured in a career-high 22 points for SLU, while junior forward
Nanna Pool (11 points, 13 rebounds) posted her team-high 10
th double-double of the season.
Pool (11.2 ppg) and senior guard
Symone Miller (10.6 ppg) are the top scorers for SLU. In conference play, junior guard
Erica Hernandez has a team-high 10.1 points per contest. Miller (24 points away) and senior guard
Elizabeth Styles (33 points away) are both chasing 1,000 career points.
Styles continues to lead the Southland Conference and ranks 16
th nationally with 6.3 assists per game. Styles is fourth in school history with 475 career assists and is within striking distance of becoming the first Lady Lion ever to reach both 1,000 career points and 500 career assists.
SLU has been out-rebounded by nearly five rebounds per game, despite featuring two of the Southland's top rebounders in Pool (8.8 rpg, 3rd) and senior forward
Jameika Hoskins (7.9 rpg, 8th). Pool is currently seventh in school history with 702 career rebounds.
Defensively, opponents has scored a league-high 73.7 points per game versus SLU. Pool is sixth in the Southland with 31 blocked shots, while Styles and Hoskins share the team lead with 36 steals. Styles is seventh in program history with 153 career steals.
Northwestern State snapped a two-game losing streak with a 75-63 win over New Orleans on Saturday. Junior guards Janelle Perez (13.7 ppg) and Keisha Lee (10.8 ppg) are the other top scorers for the Lady Demons. Senior guard Chelsea Rogers leads NSU with 6.0 rebounds per game, while Perez is averaging a team-high 3.4 assists per outing.
NSU leads the all-time series over the Lady Lions, 42-17, though SLU has a chance to complete a season sweep over the Lady Demons on Thursday. Back in Hammond on Jan. 31, SLU outlasted Northwestern State, 58-52, behind a 13-point, 11-rebound double-double effort from Pool.
