Box Score NEW ORLEANS, La. – Southeastern Louisiana stranded the potential tying run in scoring position in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings Tuesday at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium, falling to Tulane, 3-2.
Southeastern (29-21) clawed back from an early 3-0 deficit, but could not push across the tying run late in the game. Tulane (21-25) averted a sweep of the season series by the Lions for the first time since 1993 with the win.
The Green Wave scored a run in the first inning to take control. Stephen Alemais led off the inning with a single to left-center field, stole second base and then scored on Garrett Deschamp's one-out double to right.
Tulane added two more runs in the second off Lion starting pitcher
Kyle Keller (3-3).
Southeastern got to Green Wave starter Alex Massey (3-4) in the fourth for a run.
Jameson Fisher, with the second of his three hits in the game, singled up the middle to lead off the inning. A balk by Massey moved him to second.
Sam Roberson moved Fisher to third with a two-out infield single, allowing him to score easily moments later on a wild pitch.
The Lions jumped on Tulane reliever J.P. France for another run in the sixth.
Brett Hoffman singled to left-center to lead off the inning, but was erased on a fielder's choice grounder by Roberson.
Daniel Midyett turned on a pitch and yanked it over the right fielder's head for a double, sending Roberson to third. Roberson scored on
Kennon Menard's ground out to short, cutting the Lions' deficit to one.
Southeastern had a shot to tie the game in each of the final three innings.
Jacob Seward knocked a one-out double in the seventh, but was stranded following a pair of called third strikes. Midyett produced another double in the eighth, this time with two outs, and was stranded by a strikeout.
In the ninth,
Kyle Cedotal led off the inning with a single deep in the hole to the shortstop.
Jacob Williams, up next, laid down a sacrifice bunt back to the mound. Ian Gibaut, the Green Wave reliever, hesitated too long to get Cedotal at second and no one covered first on the play. Seward then sacrificed both runners into scoring position, nearly beating out the play for a hit.
Tulane elected to intentionally walk Fisher, despite snapping his string of eight-consecutive hits back in the seventh, to load the bases and set up a force at every base.
Andrew Godbold grounded into a double play to end the game.
Massey earned the win, working five innings for Tulane, and Gibaut earned his first save of the season. Keller was tagged with the loss.
Southeastern travels to McNeese State this coming Friday to open a three-game conference series against the Cowboys in Lake Charles, Louisiana.
