Box Score HAMMOND, La. – A five-run fifth inning Tuesday helped propel Southeastern Louisiana to a 9-3 win over South Alabama at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.
Back-and-forth early, Southeastern (17-11) held a one-run lead heading into the fifth inning.
The Lions took a 1-0 lead in the first.
Sam Roberson knocked a one-out double to left, moved to third on a wild pitch and then scored on
Jameson Fisher's RBI-single to right.
South Alabama (13-14) tied the game in the third and then came back to tie the game in the fourth after the Lions had taken a 2-1 lead.
Three-consecutive singles by
Daniel Midyett,
Brett Hoffman and
Kevin Carr allowed Southeastern to take the lead for good in the fourth, 3-2.
In the fifth, the Lions chased Jaguar starting pitcher Matt Bell (2-4) and reliever Dillon Buhrkuhl. Roberson led off with a double down the left-field line and moved to third on Fisher's single, his third hit of the game. Buhrkuhl relieved Bell, and in the process of walking
Andrew Godbold, uncorked a wild pitch that plated Roberson.
Buhrkuhl walked Midyett to load the bases before inducing a fielder's choice grounder out of Hoffman. Fisher was erased at the plate on the play, but the bases remained loaded. After hitting Carr to force in a run, South Alabama lifted Buhrkuhl in favor of right-hander Mark Babrick.
With two outs,
Jacob Williams lofted a fly ball to shallow right off Babrick. USA right fielder Cole Jarman attempted a sliding catch after a long run, but couldn't hang on to the ball as Williams cleared the bases with a double.
The teams traded solo home runs to complete the scoring. Godbold cranked his third of the season to lead off the seventh for the Lions.
Kyle Cedotal (1-1) earned the win with six innings of work, allowing three runs on four hits. Bell suffered the loss for the Jaguars.
Gage Pickett,
Dylan Hills and
Mason Klotz each worked a scoreless inning in relief for Southeastern.
Fisher (three) and Roberson (two) each had multi-hit games for the Lions. Williams finished with three RBIs and Carr drove in a pair.
