Nicholls Hands Southeastern First Southland Loss

Gibson posts double-double in losing effort

Box Score

THIBODAUX – Southeastern Louisiana senior forward Aja Gibson posted her second double-double of the season, but Nicholls State countered with a balanced offensive attack on the way to an 84-55 defeat of the Lady Lions in Southland Conference women's basketball action Saturday afternoon at Stopher Gymnasium.

Southeastern suffered its first conference loss of the season, falling to 2-12 overall and 1-1 in league play. Nicholls State (7-6, 2-0 Southland) shot 48.4 percent (31-for-64) from the floor – including 52.9 percent (9-for-17) from three-point range – on the way to its second straight lopsided victory to open league action.

Gibson was the lone Lady Lion to finish in double figures, posting 12 points to go with 10 rebounds. The Somerville, Tenn. native, who became the 18th student-athlete in program history to reach 1,000 career points in Thursday's 82-65 victory at McNeese State, added a team-high 10 rebounds. Her rebound total pushed her career total to 565, moving her past former Lady Lion Rita Austin for 10th place on the school's career list.

Junior guard Peaches Anderson added nine points for the Lady Lions, while sophomore forward Nanna Pool chipped in with seven points and eight rebounds. Junior guard Symone Miller, junior forward Adrina Lavern and freshman forward Chey Stewart totaled six points apiece for the Lady Lions.

Nicholls State was led by junior guard Jenny Nash, who hit four of five three point attempts on the way to an 18-point, 10-rebound double-double effort. Nash was joined in double figures by senior forward Jasmine Scott (17 points), freshman center Marina Lilly (13 points) and junior center JonMarie Guillory (10 points). Senior guard KK Babin and sophomore guard Emani White added eight points each while leading the Colonels with eight and six assists, respectively.

The Lady Lions played well for the first few minutes of the opening half, as a Pool free throw gave Southeastern a 9-7 lead with 14:06 remaining in the first period. However, Nicholls ratcheted up the defense during a 17-0 run and held Southeastern scoreless for nearly eight minutes to take control of the game. The Lady Colonels would go into the break with a commanding 45-17 lead.

NSU outscored the Lady Lions, 10-2, to opening the second half. Southeastern would get no closer than 27 in the final 20 minutes.

Saturday's contest ended a stretch of 13 consecutive regular season games away from home for the Lady Lions, who will now return home for the first time in over two months. Southeastern hosts Incarnate Word at 5 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 9 in the University Center.
