Southeastern Drops 2012-13 Finale to Lamar, 72-61

Lady Lions finish 11-18 overall and 4-14 in league play

HAMMOND – Playing in the final game of her Southeastern Louisiana career, Lady Lion senior forward Brandi Simmons posted her 12th double-double of the season but it was not enough in a 72-61 loss to Lamar in Southland Conference women's basketball action Saturday afternoon in the University Center.
 
Southeastern closed out the season with an 11-18 overall record and a 4-14 mark in Southland Conference play. Lamar (20-9, 12-6 Southland) will be the third seed in next week's league tournament.
 
Simmons, who along with senior guard Cierra Morris was honored for Senior Day, was one of four players in double figures, finishing with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Sophomore guard Symone Miller led the team with 17 points, followed by junior guard Aja Gibson (11 points) and sophomore guard Elizabeth Styles (10 points).
 
Styles led the Lady Lions with nine assists, narrowly missing her second double-double of the season. Styles and Simmons also led the team with three steals apiece, while Simmons and Gibson also had three blocks each.
 
Sophomore forward Dominique Edwards led all scorers with 21 points to pace Lamar. Lady Cardinal senior guard Kalis Loyd posted a double-double for LU, finishing with 19 points and 12 rebounds, while also pacing the team with five assists and five steals.
 
Southeastern held an early 11-8 lead after a Miller jumper with 13:37 left. Lamar answered with a 14-0 run over the next four-plus minutes, taking a 22-11 lead with 9:02 left. The Lady Lions never got back any closer than eight the rest of the half and went into the break down, 33-20.
 
Southeastern started off hot in the second half, opening with a 24-8 run after halftime, as freshman guard Erica Hernandez hit a layup to cut the Lamar lead to 44-41 with 12:20 left.
 
Lamar stepped on the gas over the next five minutes, however, putting the game away with an 18-1 run that gave the Lady Cardinals a 62-45 lead with 7:11 left. Southeastern would get no closer than seven the rest of the way.
