LAKE CHARLES, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University track and field teams each finished second Saturday in the McNeese Cowboy Relays at the McNeese State/Cameron Communications Track Complex.
With 13 teams on both the men's and women's sides, Southeastern competed well winning six events. The men earned 104 points and the women earned 84 points. Teams earned points on a sliding scale for Top-8 marks.
“It was really windy and overcast, humid and cold,” coach
Sean Brady said. “It wasn't a great day to compete, but that didn't matter.
Alicia Noel ran a meet-record time in winning the women's 400-meter hurdles.
Tess Mullings, after struggling in the long hurdles, regrouped in the short hurdles and ran well.”
Noel turned in a time of 1:01.47 in the long hurdles. Mullings claimed the top spot in the women's 100-meter hurdles (14.37 seconds) and
Teirral Thompson placed second (14.86).
Other point earners for the Lady Lions included third-place finishes by
Jessica Fekete in the hammer throw (157 feet, six inches),
Shalicia Rochon in the shot put (44-00.50) and
Jenna Baker in the javelin (125-01).
The women's 4x200-meter relay team placed fourth (1:42.29) while Jermisha Frazier and
Heather Fitzhenry finished fifth in the javelin (124-04) and one mile run (5:29.08), respectively.
Bethany Burst placed sixth in the 3,000-meter run (11:24.78) and
Brianna Golden finished seventh in the hammer throw (146-00).
“The throwers didn't have great performances, but they competed well,” Brady said. “For the men,
Derek Hampton opened with a really great throw in the javelin and could be ranked in the Top-20 nationally after this weekend.”
Hampton threw 216 feet, four inches to earn the win in the men's javelin.
Jeffrey Milliron claimed victory in the men's discus throw (178-08).
Vance Law won the men's pole vault (15-07.00) and
Phillippe Moore won the men's long jump (24-02.50).
“
Phillippe Moore continues to be big for us,” Brady said. “After being passed, he came back to win the long jump on his final attempt.”
Other point earners for the men included a second-place finish by
Jonathan Kinchen in the shot put (52-10.25) as well as third-place finishes by Milliron in the hammer throw (174-00) and shot put (52-10.00), Kinchen in the discus throw (158-05),
Tarvoris Mack in the 400-meter hurdles (55.23 seconds) and the Lions' 4x200-meter relay team (1:27.36).
Southeastern finished fourth in the 4x100-meter relay (41.77 seconds) while Moore placed fourth in the triple jump (46-04.00). Kinchen placed fifth in the hammer throw (168-06).
Sixth-place finishes for the men included
Shaun Lowe in the 400-meter hurdles (56.66 seconds) and Mack in the 110-meter hurdles (15.16) while
Christian Chapman placed seventh in the 400-meter hurdles (56.77).
“We really showed up,” Brady said. “It was the first one out for everybody and we competed really well. We're leaving McNeese with our spirits pretty high.”
Southeastern returns to action Friday and Saturday in Lafayette, La., in the Louisiana Classics.
