Gibson Named to Preseason All-Southland Teams

Senior is a first team selection

HAMMOND – Southeastern Louisiana senior forward Aja Gibson was selected to the 2013-14 Preseason Women's Basketball All-Southland Conference Teams, which were announced by the league office on Thursday.

Gibson, a two-time All-Southland selection, was named to the team as a first team. Lady Lion head coach Lori Davis Jones was pleased to see Gibson recognized by her peers in the league.

"Aja deserves to be listed among the best in the Southland Conference," Jones commented. "She's worked hard throughout her career and is playing at the highest level we've seen from her heading into her senior year. Aja is a tremendous representative of our program and we're going to need her, as our go-to player in the post, to perform at a first team All-Southland-caliber level to reach our goals this season."

Gibson, a Somerville, Tenn. native, was the team's leading scorer at 10.9 points per game on the way to earning third team All-Southland Conference honors. The 15th leading scorer in the league, she also ranked among the Southland leaders in field goal percentage (45.7, 8th), free throw percentage (68.2, 15th) and offensive rebounds (2.3, 13th). Gibson heads into 2013-14 needing 137 points to become the 18th student-athlete in program history to reach 1,000 career points.

Gibson was joined on the first team by Stephen F. Austin junior center Porsha Roberts, senior guard KK Babin of Nicholls State, Central Arkansas senior center Courtney Duever and Northwestern State sophomore guard Janelle Perez. Senior forward Cecilia Okoye of McNeese State, Oral Roberts senior center Sarah Shelton, junior forward Dominique Edwards and senior guard Gia Ayers of Lamar, Nicholls State senior forward LiAnn McCarthy and Stephen F. Austin senior forward Antoinette Carter make up the second team.

Gibson and the Lady Lions will open the 2013-14 season on Nov. 8, hosting Mobile at 7 p.m. in the University Center.
