Lady Lions Come Up Short against Nicholls

Southeastern was unable to close out Saturday's home contest

HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University women's basketball team hosted Nicholls in the University Center for the second of three home games, dropping a 69-66 contest to the Colonels Saturday.
 
Southeastern (2-16, 1-10 in SLC) was bested by Nicholls (10-8, 6-5 in SLC) in Saturday's game. The Southland Conference matchup was back-and-forth with both teams exchanging leads in the fourth quarter.
 
Aliyah Collins paced SLU with 16 points on 6-for-12 shooting, including three big triples, the last of which put Southeastern ahead in the fourth quarter. Lihi Azouri's 14 points placed her second on the team in scoring. Collins and Natalie Huff each had a game-high four assists.
 
On the defensive end of the floor, Collins tied the game-leading mark with three steals, while Huff, Aisha Marten-Coney, and Taylor Ross notched two swipes apiece. Ross also led SLU in rebounding with six boards off the bench.
 
Marie Kenembeni was the leading scorer in Saturday's game with 21 points, while Sh'Diamond McKnight (14) and Jesslyn Jalomo (11) also reached double-digit scoring. Kenembeni led the game with nine rebounds with Tanita Swift tying Collins for a game-leading three steals.
 
Saturday's game included 11 lead changes and six ties. With over three minutes left in the third quarter, the Colonels had their largest lead of the game at seven, 52-45. Collins, Huff, and Ross each had scores to tie the game at 53-all to end the quarter. After a go-ahead three by Collins in the fourth, SLU managed to maintain its lead until three minutes remained in the game, 63-62. After a 7-3 Nicholls run, the Colonels survived a missed game-tying three to win the game.
 
The Lady Lions will conclude their home stand Thursday with a matchup against Lamar, at 6 p.m. in the University Center. Thursday's game against Lamar will be Faculty/Staff Night. Southeastern is celebrating its faculty and staff who make the SLU community strong. Fans can join in on the fun when Southeastern honors its faculty and staff for all that they do. Thursday's Spotlight Player of the Game is Aliyah Collins. The first 150 fans will receive a trading card of the College Station, Texas native, courtesy of PRIDE.
