HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University women's basketball team fell to the Lamar Cardinals after playing its best defense of the season Thursday, falling to the visitors in the University Center, 57-44.
Southeastern (2-17, 1-11 in SLC) was defeated by Lamar (13-6, 10-2 in SLC) in the fourth quarter of Thursday's home contest. SLU held the Cardinals to 22 points at halftime, but could not hold off Lamar in the final minutes.
Lihi Azouri led all players Thursday with 15 points, including four three-pointers.
Aliyah Collins and
Bethany Graves tied for second among the Lady Lions, offensively, with 8 points apiece. Collins also dished four assists to lead all student-athletes in the game.
Fatime Seck set the tone for the Lady Lions defensively, bringing in a team-high seven rebounds, along with a game-high mark of three steals, contributing to SLU's 10 team steals. Southeastern held Lamar to 57 points, tying the Cardinals' lowest scoring mark since November. SLU's defense held the opposing offense to its lowest total since Southeastern's season opener.
R'Mani Taylor was the top Cardinals scorer Thursday, notching nine points. After scoring 29 points against SFA, Lamar's leading scorer for the season, Kamryn Wilson was held in check by SLU, only scoring six points, all of which came at the free throw line. Chisom Oguego's 11 rebounds led all players in the game, tying Seck's game-high three steals.
After holding the Cardinals to 22 points at halftime, the Lady Lions trailed by one at halftime. Lamar found its stride in the third to end the frame with a six-point edge. The Lady Lions got back within four in the fourth before the Cardinals' offense got going to secure the win.
SLU will end the week on the road in Nacogdoches, Texas, taking on SFA, Saturday, at 2 p.m. The game will be televised on ESPN+ and can be heard on KSLU 90.9 The Lion, online at either
