No. 3 Baylor Overwhelms Southeastern

Defending national champions too much for Lady Lions

WACO, Texas  – Defending national champion and current No. 3 Baylor had four players reach double figures on the way to a 106-41 victory over Southeastern Louisiana in non-conference women's basketball action Saturday night at the Ferrell Center.
 
The Lady Lions (7-4) closed out non-conference play with the lopsided loss against the balanced Lady Bears (10-1), who saw all 13 of their players score in the win. Baylor was efficient, hitting 60 percent (45-for-75) from the floor and winning by an identical score as in the teams' last meeting back in 2010-11.
 
Senior forward Brandi Simmons led Southeastern with 12 points and four rebounds, though Baylor out-rebounded Southeastern, 49-20. Junior forward Aja Gibson added eight points, while freshman forward Nanna Pool and junior guard Taylor Mims chipped in six points apiece.
 
Sophomore guard Symone Miller dished out a team-high three assists, while Pool, sophomore guard Elizabeth Styles and freshman guard Erica Hernandez were credited with two assists each. Styles also had a team-high two steals.
 
Freshman guard Alexis Prince led Baylor with 17 points and was joined in double figures by senior post Destiny Williams (14 points), senior guard Jordan Madden (13 points) and reigning national player of the year Brittney Griner (12 points). Williams and graduate forward Brooklyn Pope pulled down eight rebounds apiece for the Lady Bears, who had seven assists from junior guard Odyssey Sims.
 
Griner, who is approaching the national career record for blocked shots, finished with five blocks. Prince and senior guard Kimetria Hayden finished with four steals each, as Baylor forced Southeastern into 25 turnovers.
 
Baylor opened the game with a 16-2 run and went into the break up, 52-19. Southeastern kept the deficit around 40 for the first 10 minutes of the second half, but Baylor finished the game on a 32-8 run to provide the final margin.
 
The Lady Lions will return home on Thursday to open Southland Conference play versus new league member Oral Roberts. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:15 p.m. and the game will be broadcast live in the Hammond area on KSLU-FM (90.9) and on the Internet at www.LionSports.net, where live stats and a live video stream will also be available.
 
Pool will be the Spotlight Player of the Game on Thursday and trading cards featuring the Magnolia, Miss. will be distributed to fans as available, courtesy of the Southeastern PRIDE.
