HUNTSVILLE, Texas – Junior right-hander
Josh Janway scattered seven hits in six solid innings of work and Southeastern Louisiana used a four-run sixth inning to claim a 4-2 win over Sam Houston State in a Southland Conference game Sunday at Don Sanders Stadium.
Jason Greenleaf pitched three innings of hitless relief in earning his second save of the year as Southeastern (30-16, 14-10) reached the 30-win plateau for the fifth consecutive season.
Southeastern managed four hits against three SHSU pitchers, but scored all the runs it would need in the sixth inning as it erased a 1-0 deficit.
Trey Martin led off the frame when he was hit by a pitch from SHSU starter Matt Shelton (6-1) before stealing second and moving to third on a sacrifice bunt by
Brock Hebert.
Jonathan Pace then hit a chopper against a drawn-in Bearkat infield and Ryan Mooney bobbled it for an error that allowed Martin to score and tie the game at 1-1.
Justin Boudreaux then followed with a single to center before
Jeff Harkensee singled off the glove the first baseman Daniel Nottebart, which allowed Pace to score for a 2-1 lead.
After
Josh Cryer was hit by a pitch to load the bases,
Cass Hargis hit a chopper to second for a potential double play, but Hargis beat out the throw at first that scored Boudreaux and gave Southeastern a 3-1 lead.
Huntsville native
Cody Gougler then hit a slow roller to third base and beat out the throw that scored Harkensee and gave the Lions a 4-1 advantage.
Janway (4-2) held SHSU in check and he fanned four batters and an earned run. Chris Andreas' solo home run in the first inning gave the Bearkats a 1-0 lead, but the former Parkview Baptist product held the SHSU bats in check and was aided by a defense that turned a pair of inning-ending double plays.
SHSU cut the lead to 4-2 in the sixth inning when Braeden Riley hit a one-out single, reached second on a throwing error, moved to third on a balk and scored on a sacrifice fly by Nottebart.
Greenleaf, a Covington native and former St. Paul's School product, retired all nine batters he faced, including a four-pitch inning in the eighth.
Mooney led SHSU at the plate as he went 2-for-4. Shelton took the loss for the Bearkats after scattering four hits and fanning five batters in six innings of action.
Southeastern will return to action on Tuesday when it travels to New Orleans to face UNO in the Lions final midweek game of the season. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. The game can be heard in the Hammond area on KSLU-FM (90.9) and on the internet at www.LionSports.net.
