HAMMOND – Tyler Watkins recorded his second complete game victory of the season, scattering six hits and striking out eight, while freshman
Britt Gautreaux belted a three-run home run to key a five-run second inning to lead Southeastern Louisiana to an 8-1 win over Lamar in a Southland Conference contest Saturday afternoon at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.
The series concludes on Sunday at 1 p.m. The game can be heard in the Hammond area on KSLU-FM (90.9) and on the internet at www.LionSports.net.
Watkins (5-0), who earned a complete game victory on Feb. 20 at Florida International, retired the first eight batters he faced until Ted Zentek hit an opposite-field single in the third inning. The senior right-hander got out of a jam in the fifth inning when Lamar (19-11, 7-4 SLC) loaded the bases with one out before getting Zentek to hit into a 4-6-3 double play to end the threat.
Gautreaux gave Southeastern (18-10, 6-5 SLC) all the runs it would need in the second inning when he belted the first pitch from Lamar starter Jeff Abt (0-2) over the right-field fence to give the Lions a 3-0 lead.
Josh Cryer hit a one-out double to left field and
Cass Hargis was hit by a pitch before the former Dutchtown High product recorded his first collegiate home run.
The Lions continued the inning as
Cody Gougler was hit by a pitch and
Jacob Fisher drew a walk.
Brock Hebert drove in both runners when he doubled over the head of Cardinal left fielder Kevin Roebuck to put Southeastern ahead, 5-0.
Southeastern added a run in the third inning before taking an 8-0 lead in the fourth. The Lions loaded the bases when Hebert was hit by a pitch,
Justin Boudreaux reached on an error and
Jonathan Pace walked.
Jeff Harkensee drove in Hebert with a fielder's choice and Pace scored on a ground out to short.
Lamar broke up the shutout in the eighth after collecting three hits in the inning off Watkins. Roebuck hit a double just inside the left-field line and scored two batters later when Abt hit a two-out double.
Gautreaux went 2-for-4 to lead Southeastern at the plate while Hargis went 1-for-3 to increase his career total to 263 hits – 13 shy of the school-record held by
Ty Summerlin.
Abt, one of seven pitchers used by Lamar, went 1.2 innings and allowed five runs on three hits. The Cardinals walked eight batters and stranded seven runners on base.
