Lions, Cardinals To Face Off In Southland Conference Series

Both teams look to bounce back from series losses last weekend

HAMMOND – The Southeastern Louisiana University baseball team returns to Southland Conference action on Friday when it begins a three-game series against Lamar University at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.

First pitch for Friday's game is scheduled for 6 p.m. The series continues on Saturday at 2 p.m. followed by the finale on Sunday at 1. Saturday's game will feature a reunion of former Southeastern letterwinners that includes a picnic lunch beginning at noon. A pre-game presentation of all former players will begin at 1:40 p.m. with members of the 1965 and 1966 Gulf States Conference championship teams receiving special recognition.

All three games can be heard in the Hammond area on KSLU-FM (90.9) and on the internet at www.LionSports.net.

Southeastern (17-9, 5-4 SLC) won a pair of midweek games defeating Southern in Baton Rouge on Tuesday before an 11-0 win over visiting UNO on Wednesday. Josh Janway pitched four strong innings to earn his second win of the season while Cass Hargis went 3-for-5 and moved closer to Ty Summerlin's school-record of 276 hits.

Justin Boudreaux (.415-5-27) leads Southeastern at the plate with Jonathan Pace (.393-1-21), Brock Hebert (.359-1-15) and Jeff Harkensee (.333-7-35) next. As a team, Southeastern ranks fourth in the Southland Conference in hitting at .299.

Right-hander Brandon Efferson (4-1, 4.50 ERA) is slated to start in Friday's opener with Tyler Watkins (4-0, 2.09 ERA) expected to start on Saturday. The starter for Sunday's contest is to be announced.

Lamar (18-10, 6-3 SLC), the defending Southland Conference Tournament champion, dropped two of three last week against league co-leader Texas State before earning a 7-3 win at No. 19 Baylor on Wednesday.

Wade Mathis leads Lamar at the plate with a .368 average with two home runs and 23 RBI. Ted Zentek (.333-0-14), Joey Latulippe (.322-0-20) and Kevin Roebuck (.322-4-24) are next in hitting for the Cardinals, who are sixth in the league with a .292 average.

Right-hander Blake Ford (3-2, 2.56 ERA) is slated to start in Friday's opener for Lamar with Jonathan Dziedzic (1-1, 4.73 ERA) and Jeff Abt (0-1, 5.32 ERA) expected to start the final two games.
