Lady Lions look to complete season sweep of defending league champs

Jessica Sommers and the Lady Lions travel to Lamar on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
BEAUMONT, Texas – The Southeastern Louisiana women's basketball team will return to action on Wednesday, facing Lamar at 7 p.m. in Southland Conference action at the Montagne Center.

The Lady Lions (10-12, 2-8 Southland) will be looking to snap a three-game losing skid and have lost seven of their last eight games heading into Wednesday's road game at the defending Southland Conference champion Lady Cardinals (19-5, 8-2 Southland). The game will be broadcast live in the Hammond area on KSLU-FM (90.9) and on the Internet at www.LionSports.net. Live video and stats will also be available at www.lamarcardinals.com.

Southeastern dropped a heartbreaking 54-53 decision to Northwestern State on Saturday. Junior guard Kelli Jenkins missed the potential game-winner in the final seconds for Southeastern.

In the loss, senior forward Rashima Jenkins led the Lady Lions with 12 points, while Kelli Jenkins added 11 points. Both players, along with senior guard Mary Fountain, pulled down a team-high six rebounds.

Southeastern is averaging 62.5 points per team and features a pair of double-digit scorers in Kelli Jenkins (10.2 ppg) and Rashima Jenkins (10.0 ppg). Senior guard Chelsea Hix (7.8 ppg), freshman forward Aja Gibson (7.6 ppg) and senior center Rachel Mackie (6.3 ppg).

Wednesday's game will match up the league's two most accurate shooting teams, as both Lamar and Southeastern are shooting 41 percent from the floor. Rashima Jenkins (49.7, 3rd) and Kelli Jenkins (42.4, 14th) represent the Lady Lions among the league leaders in field goal percentage.

In addition to being the team's top scorer, Kelli Jenkins is also the team's top distributor, ranking ninth in the league with 3.5 assists. The Plaquemine native is currently sixth in school history with 288 assists.

Hix is the team's top three-point shooter, sitting in ninth place in the league with 1.7 three point field goals per game. Her 151 makes from behind the arc are the second-most in school history.

The Lady Lions continue to lead the Southland with a plus-4.0 rebounding margin. Rashima Jenkins leads the team and sits ninth in the league with 7.4 rebounds per contest. Mackie (6.6 rpg, 12th) is also among the Southland leaders and needs 16 rebounds to become the 15th student-athlete in school history to reach 500 career rebounds.

Defensively, the Lady Lions are allowing 66.6 points per game and forcing 17.0 turnovers per contest. Junior guard Latoria Holder leads the team with 30 steals, followed by Fountain (29) and Kelli Jenkins (28). Holder's 12 blocks are also tops on the team.

The Southeastern defensive effort will have to be at its best on Wednesday, when it faces a Lamar team that is averaging a league-high 72.8 points per game. The Lady Cardinals have won three in a row and seven of their last eight games, with their only loss in that stretch coming to Southeastern by a 67-61 score on Feb. 2 in Hammond.

On Saturday, Lamar moved past Nicholls, 70-56, in Thibodaux. Sophomore guard Jasmine Henderson led Lamar with 18 points and was joined in double figures by senior guard Jenna Plumley (15 points), junior forward Monique Whittaker (12 points), sophomore guard Taylor Hays (11 points) and junior guard Ang Green (10 points). Senior forward Trashanna Smith pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds from Lamar.

Sophomore wing Kalis Loyd (14.2 ppg, 7th), Whittaker (14.0 ppg, 10th) and Plumley (13.3 ppg, 13th) are among the league leaders in scoring. Plumley, the reigning Southland Conference Player of the Year, also leads the league with 5.3 assists per game and is shooting a league-best 93.4 percent from the free throw line.

Loyd is among the league's most accurate shooters, ranking second in the Southland with a 50.4 field goal percentage. Henderson tops the Southland with a 39.4 three-point field goal percentage, while Plumley is third in the conference with 2.6 three-point field goals per game.

Lamar is averaging 40.3 rebounds per contest, but is being out-rebounded by an average of a rebound per contest. Smith leads the team and is fourth in the Southland with 8.3 rebounds per game and is joined among the league leaders by teammates Loyd (6.5 rpg, 13th) and Whittaker (5.5 rpg, 18th).

Defensively, Lamar is holding opponents to 62.4 points per game and forcing 22.0 turnovers per contest. Plumley leads the league with 3.3 steals per game, while Loyd sits in 5th (2.3 spg). Smith's 47 blocks are the second-most in the Southland Conference.

Southeastern is 19-10 all-time versus Lamar, including the win over the Lady Cardinals two weeks ago. However, the Lady Lions have not won in Beaumont since the 2006-07 season.

In the win earlier this season, Southeastern had its most balanced offensive effort of the season. Hix led the Lady Lions with 12 points and was joined in double figures by Mackie (11 points) and Kelli Jenkins (10 points). Rashima Jenkins, Gibson and junior guard Jessica Sommers chipped in eight points, offsetting game-high scoring performances by Whittaker (17 points) and Loyd (16 points).

Wednesday's game is the start of a stretch that will see Southeastern play three of its next four games away from home. On Saturday, Southeastern will head to Arlington, Texas for a 2 p.m. game with UT Arlington. The game will be broadcast live in the Hammond area on KSLU-FM (90.9) and on the Internet at www.LionSports.net.
