ULL Edges Southeastern, 63-54, in Overtime

Lady Lions still search for first road win

LAFAYETTE – Louisiana-Lafayette outscored Southeastern 14-5 in the extra period to hand the Lady Lions a 63-54 overtime loss in non-conference women's basketball action Sunday afternoon at the Earl K. Long Gym.
 
Southeastern fell to 4-5 overall with the loss and remained winless on the road. Louisiana-Lafayette won its third straight game to improve to 4-4.
 
Senior guard Kelli Jenkins led the Lady Lions with 11 points, while freshman guard Elizabeth Styles added nine for Southeastern, which shot 31.7 percent (20-for-63) from the floor and committed 20 turnovers. Jenkins also led Southeastern with four assists and three steals.
 
Junior forward Brandi Simmons paced Southeastern with a season-high 13 rebounds and two blocked shots. Southeastern finished with a 44-40 rebounding advantage.
 
Kemi Rotibi led ULL with 21 points and narrowly missed a double-double with a team-high nine rebounds to go with four blocked shots. Rotibi was one of three Ragin' Cajuns in double figures, as Michelle Brunker and Megan Whittaker had 10 points apiece.
 
The Lady Lions trailed 28-24 at halftime, but battled back in a second half that featured eight lead changes. A pair of free throws by senior guard Latoria Holder tied the game at 49 with 25 seconds left and then Southeastern came up with a stop to force overtime.
 
Brunker hit a three to open the overtime period and gave the Ragin' Cajuns the lead for good. Southeastern shot just 1-for-7 from the floor in the extra period, as ULL's lead grew to as much as 10.
 
Southeastern will close out the pre-Christmas portion of its schedule when it hosts the Christmas Classic on Friday and Saturday in the University Center. The Lady Lions open the tournament with a 7 p.m. contest versus Alcorn State on Friday and host Florida A&M on Saturday at 4 p.m.
 
Both of Southeastern's tournament games will be broadcast live in the Hammond area on KSLU-FM (90.9) and on the Internet at www.LionSports.net. Styles will be Saturday's Spotlight Player of the Game and the first 100 fans will receive a trading card featuring the Savannah, Ga. native courtesy of the Southeastern PRIDE.
