Lady Lions Host Louisiana-Lafayette

Southeastern welcomes in-state foe to UC on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

HAMMOND – Fans attending the Southeastern Louisiana women's basketball team's 7 p.m. game versus Louisiana Lafayette on Tuesday in the University Center will also have the opportunity to experience a special performance by the world renowned ACRODUNK Extreme Dunkers.

The ACRODUNK Extreme Dunkers will provide the halftime entertainment at Tuesday's game between the host Lady Lions (3-2) and visiting Ragin' Cajuns (1-4), as well as Wednesday's men's basketball game with Louisiana Tech at 7 p.m. with their unique blend of acrobatics, dunking and humor as seen on NBC's America's Got Talent.

Tuesday will also kick off the week-long canned food drive to benefit the Tangi Food Pantry sponsored by the Southeastern Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. For every canned food item donated, fans will receive an entry in a drawing for a Southeastern prize pack, which includes two Top Cat seats for the game of the winner's choosing. Canned goods will be collected at Tuesday and Wednesday's game, as well as Sunday's women's basketball game with Spring Hill at 3 p.m.

Tuesday's game will be broadcast live in the Hammond area on KSLU-FM (90.9) and on the Internet at www.LionSports.net, where live stats will also be available. The contest will also be aired on a tape delay basis by the Southeastern Channel (Charter Channel 18 in the Hammond area) and a live video stream will be available free at http://www2.selu.edu/thesoutheasternchannel/.

Southeastern Louisiana junior guard Taylor Mims will be Tuesday's Spotlight Player of the Game. The first 100 fans will receive a trading card featuring the Baton Rouge native, courtesy of the Southeastern PRIDE. Mims is sitting out 2011-12 after transferring from College of Charleston.

Southeastern is coming off a 54-45 win over Mobile on Saturday. Sophomore forward Aja Gibson led the Lady Lions with 13 points and rebounds. Senior Latoria Holder keyed a stout Lady Lion defensive effort that forced 23 turnovers, finishing with a game-high four steals to go with eight points, seven rebounds and three assists.

The Lady Lions are averaging 64.4 points per game and shooting 42 percent from the floor. Gibson and senior guard Kelli Jenkins share the team lead with 11.0 points per game. Junior forward Brandi Simmons (7.2 ppg), freshman guard Symone Miller (6.6 ppg) and Holder (6.0 ppg) are the other top scorers for Southeastern.

Jenkins (3.4 apg) and freshman guard Elizabeth Styles (2.8 apg) are the top distributors for the Lady Lions. Jenkins' 334 assists in her career are the sixth-most ever by a Southeastern player.

Southeastern is averaging 37.2 rebounds per game, but has a minus-2.4 rebounding margin through the first five games of the season. Simmons continues to lead the team with 6.8 rebounds per contest, followed by Gibson, who is pulling down 5.4 boards per outing.

Defensively, Southeastern is holding opponents to 60.2 points per game and 39.5 percent field goal shooting, while also forcing 21.4 turnovers per contest. Holder leads the team with 2.2 steals per game, while Styles has 1.8 steals per game. Freshman forward Hillary Shaffer continues to lead the team in blocked shots, averaging 1.4 blocks per contest.

Southeastern is facing a Louisiana-Lafayette team that will be looking to bounce back from a 103-44 loss to San Diego last Friday. Senior guard Krystal Motley was the lone Ragin' Cajun in double figures with 11 points in the loss, as San Diego forced ULL into 28 turnovers.

On the year, Louisiana-Lafayette is averaging 55.2 points and 21.6 turnovers per outing. Motley leads the team with 12.3 points per game and is joined in double figures by senior forward Mercedes Johnson (11.4 ppg). Senior center Kemi Rotibi (6.2 ppg), freshman guard Robbie Brown (5.4 ppg) and freshman guard Brooklyn Arceneaux (5.0 rpg) are the other top scorers for the Ragin' Cajuns.

In addition to being one of the top scorers, Johnson leads the team with 1.4 assists per game. Rotibi (7.4 rpg) and Johnson (7.2 rpg) are the team's top rebounders, as Louisiana-Lafayette is averaging 36.4 rebounds per game and comes into Tuesday's contest with a minus-5.2 rebounding margin.

The Ragin' Cajuns are allowing 74.8 points and forcing 16.0 turnovers per contest. Brown leads the team with 2.0 steals per contest, while Rotibi's 1.6 blocked shots per game pace the squad.

Southeastern will be the third Southland Conference member Louisiana-Lafayette has faced in 2011-12. Nicholls State defeated ULL, 72-64, on Nov. 17 and the Ragin' Cajuns lost, 80-59, at McNeese State on Nov. 21.

Southeastern holds a 29-11 advantage in the all-time series versus Louisiana-Lafayette. The two teams split a home-and-home series last season with both teams winning on their respective home floors. Tuesday's game will be the first of two meetings between the Lady Lions and Ragin' Cajuns this season, as Southeastern heads to Lafayette on Dec. 11.

Following Tuesday's game, Southeastern will head to Alabama for a 6:30 p.m. contest on Friday in Tuscaloosa, Ala. Friday's game will be broadcast live in the Hammond area on KSLU-FM (90.9) and on the Internet at www.LionSports.net.
