HAMMOND – Central Arkansas sophomore forward Meghan Herbert scored four points in the final 20 seconds to push the Sugar Bears to a 69-65 victory over Southeastern Louisiana in Southland Conference women's basketball action Wednesday night at the University Center.

Southeastern dropped its third straight game, falling to 9-8 overall and 1-4 in league action. UCA ran its record to 12-7 overall and 4-2 in Southland action.

Southeastern trailed by as many as eight, but slowly but surely chipped away at the Sugar Bear lead. A free throw by junior guard Kelli Jenkins knotted the score at 62 with 1:47 remaining.

However, Herbert answered on the ensuing UCA possession bulling into the lane for a three-point play to give the Sugar Bears a 65-62 lead with 1:16 left. As the shot clock was running down, Kelli Jenkins found senior guard Chelsea Hix open at the top of the key and the Canton, Ga. native drilled her third three-point field goal of the game to knot the score with 46 seconds left.

UCA again went to Herbert, who converted another basket and was fouled. She missed the free throw, but junior guard Nakeia Guiden grabbed the rebound. After running a few more seconds off the clock, Herbert was fouled and iced the game with a pair of free throws with 17 seconds left.

Junior guard Jessica Sommers led Southeastern with a career-high 13 points, while Hix and senior center Rachel Mackie added 11 points each. With her three three-point field goals, Hix moved into second place on her own on the school's career list with 142 three-point field goals.

Hix and Kelli Jenkins were tied for the team lead with three assists each, as Jenkins moved into seventh place by herself on the school's career list with 274 career assists. Mackie and senior forward Rashima Jenkins led Southeastern with six rebounds each.

Guiden led all scorers with 19 points, which included a 9-for-10 performance from the free throw line. Herbert added 18 points to go with a game-high seven rebounds and four assists. Freshman center Courtney Duever chipped in with 10 points and six boards off the bench for UCA.

Southeastern will head to Northwestern State on Saturday for a 2 p.m. contest. The game will be broadcast live in the Hammond area on KSLU-FM (90.9) and on the Internet at www.LionSports.net.
