HAMMOND – The Southeastern Louisiana women's basketball team will return to the court on Saturday, hosting Southland Conference and in-state foe Nicholls at 3 p.m. in the University Center.
The Lady Lions (9-6, 1-2 Southland) will look to improve on its perfect 6-0 home record. Nicholls (4-12, 0-4 Southland) will be attempting to snap its six-game losing streak. Saturday's game will be broadcast on the Internet only at www.LionSports.net, where live stats will also be available.
Junior guard
Amber Crenshaw and freshman guard
Aarika Reyna will be Saturday's Spotlight Players of the Game. The first 100 fans will receive trading cards featuring the two players courtesy of the Southeastern PRIDE. Crenshaw, a Memphis native, has been a key reserve for the Lady Lions for the past three seasons, while Houston native Reyna is redshirting this season and will make her on-court debut in 2011-12.
Southeastern will also offer a discounted ticket price to those attending the Alumni Association's Champagne Bingo. Fans who present a ticket from that event will receive admission for $2.
The Lady Lions will be looking to bounce back from a 74-50 league loss at McNeese State on Wednesday. Southeastern committed 25 turnovers and was unable to overcome a 15-2 start by the Cowgirls, despite a team-high 11 points from senior
Chelsea Hix.
Southeastern is averaging 63.7 points per game. Junior guard
Kelli Jenkins (9.7 ppg, 23rd), freshman forward
Aja Gibson (9.5 ppg, 25th) and senior forward
Rashima Jenkins (9.3 ppg, 27th) are all among the league's top scorers. Hix (6.9 ppg), junior guard
Latoria Holder (6.8 ppg) and senior center
Rachel Mackie (5.9 ppg) are the other top scorers.
The Lady Lions are second in the Southland with a 40.4 team field goal percentage. Gibson ranks third in the league, hitting 50.9 percent of her shots from the floor.
Rashima Jenkins is right behind her in fourth place with a 48.6 field goal percentage.
Hix is the team's top long range threat, ranking 15th in the Southland with 1.7 three-point field goals per game. The Canton, Ga. native needs one trey to move into a tie for second with former Lady Lion Shanna Achord for second place on the school's career list.
Much like Hix,
Kelli Jenkins, who is fourth in the Southland with 3.8 assists per game, is climbing one of the school's career list. Jenkins needs two assists to move into a tie for seventh place with former Lady Lion Martha Lee on the school's career list.
The Lady Lions' plus-4.7 rebounding margin continues to lead the Southland Conference.
Rashima Jenkins leads the team and is eighth in the league with 7.3 rebounds per contest. Mackie's 6.7 rebounds per outing are good for 13th in the league.
Southeastern is allowing opponents to score 66.2 points per game and forcing 21.4 turnovers per contest. Holder leads the team and ranks ninth in the Southland with 1.9 steals per game, while senior guard
Mary Fountain sits in 13th with 1.7 steals per contest. Holder also ranks among the league leaders with a team-high 10 blocked shots.
Much like Southeastern, Nicholls is looking to bounce back from a lopsided road league defeat. On Wednesday, the Lady Colonels dropped a 91-56 decision at Central Arkansas.
Freshman forward LiAnn McCarthy led four Lady Colonels in double figures with 13 points. McCarthy was joined in double figures by junior guard Sumar Leslie (12 points), senior guard Ricshanda Bickham (12 points) and sophomore forward Alisha Allen (10 points).
Nicholls is averaging 60.9 points per game and features four players with double-digit per game scoring averages. Bickham leads the team and ranks seventh in the Southland with 14.6 points per game. Freshman guard KK Babin (12.4 ppg, 12th) and Allen (11.4 ppg, 17th) join Bickham among the Southland's leading scorers. Leslie is averaging 12.0 points per contest, but has not played in enough games to qualify for the league leaderboard.
Babin and Bickham rank among the league's top three-point shooters with 45 and 30 three-point field goals made, respectively. Bickham (3.7 apg, 6th) and Babin (3.6 apg, 7th) are both also among the league's most prolific distributors.
Nicholls is averaging 32.1 rebounds per game, but has a league-worst minus-13.6 rebounding margin. Allen is 16th in the Southland with 5.7 boards per contest.
The Colonels are allowing 71.6 points per game and forcing 16.9 turnovers per contest. Babin (2.5 spg, 3rd) and Bickham (2.2 spg, 6th) are both among the league's steal leaders. Allen is sixth in the Southland with 1.5 steals per game.
Southeastern holds a 53-12 advantage in the all-time series versus Nicholls. The Lady Lions have won five consecutive games versus the Colonels. Last season,
Kelli Jenkins poured in 20 points to help Southeastern rally for a 72-68 win in Thibodaux. In a 60-49 home win over the Colonels earlier in 2009-10, Crenshaw netted a career-high 14 points off the bench.
Following Saturday's game, Southeastern will return to the University Center on Wednesday at 7 p.m., hosting Central Arkansas. Junior guard
Gabrielle George will be Wednesday's Spotlight Player of the Game and the first 100 fans will receive a trading card featuring the Cedar Hill, Texas native courtesy of the Southeastern PRIDE.
Next Wednesday's game will be live streamed by the Southeastern Channel (Charter Channel 18) and will air on a tape-delayed basis the following night. The game can also be heard on the Internet only at www.LionSports.net, where live stats will also be available.
