Early Deficit Too Much for Southeastern to Overcome in 67-57 Loss to ULL

Lady Lions drop to 5-2 despite 54-21 rebounding advantage

LAFAYETTE – Southeastern Louisiana could not overcome a 24-point first-half deficit and 30 turnovers in a 67-57 loss to in-state foe Louisiana-Lafayette in non-conference women's basketball action Sunday afternoon at the Earl K. Long Gym.

Southeastern fell to 5-2 overall with its second consecutive loss, despite out-rebounding Louisiana-Lafayette, 54-21. The Cajuns evened their record at 4-4 overall with the victory.

Southeastern cut the lead to nine late in the game on a steal and layup by junior guard Jessica Sommers, but could get no closer.

Senior forward Rashima Jenkins led Southeastern with 13 points, while Sommers chipped in with 11 points off the bench. Rashima Jenkins, senior center Rachel Mackie and senior guard Mary Fountain keyed Southeastern's domination on the boards, as each finished with a team-high eight rebounds.

Freshman forward Aja Gibson came off the bench with eight points for the Lady Lions and blocked a game-high two shots. Junior guard Kelli Jenkins led Southeastern with two steals, while junior guard Gabrielle George had a team-high two assists.

Senior post Lyndra Bell led the Ragin' Cajuns with 18 points, seven rebounds and three steals in the win. Senior guard Jasmine Barnes and junior guard Danielle Smith had 10 points apiece for ULL, who shot 46.4 percent (25-for-56) from the floor and scored 20 points off Lady Lion turnovers.

Louisiana-Lafayette scored the game's first 10 points and held a 42-24 advantage at the break. Rashima Jenkins had eight points in the opening half to lead Southeastern, but the Lady Lions committed 16 turnovers and Louisiana-Lafayette countered with 57.1 percent (16-for-28) shooting from the field to take the commanding lead into halftime.

Southeastern will be back in action on Saturday, facing Ole Miss at 1 p.m. in Oxford, Miss. Saturday's game will be broadcast live in the Hammond area on KSLU-FM (90.9) and on the Internet at www.LionSports.net.
