Southeastern (11-8, 3-3 SLC) improved to 10-1 at home this season with an impressive 71-54 victory over Central Arkansas on Wednesday in the University Center. The Lady Lions' next step will be to see if it can put together the same kind of performance on the road, where they are 1-7 this season, including 0-3 in league play.
Lady Lion senior forward
Kristy Carlin poured in a career-high 24 points versus UCA, while junior guard
Kim Edmonson added 12 points versus the Sugar Bears. Carlin leads the team and ranks third in the Southland Conference with 15.2 points per game. Edmonson and senior guard
Charinee Mitchell are next with 8.1 per game scoring averages, as the Lady Lions are averaging 63.7 points per game.
For the second straight contest, Southeastern hit 12 three-point field goals in Wednesday's win. Carlin tied a school record for single-game three-point field goal percentage with a 5-for-6 performance from behind the arc, while Edmonson hit four threes and Mitchell dropped in three. Southeastern is currently 12th in the nation with a league-high 7.9 three-point field goals per game, as Edmonson, Mitchell, junior wing
Quantae Thomas and Carlin all rank in the SLC top 15 in terms of three-point field goals per game.
In conference play, the Lady Lions are averaging a gaudy 9.3 treys per contest. Mitchell and Carlin have each made 16 threes in league play, while Carlin is hitting 52.2 percent of her tries from behind the arc versus league competition. Southeastern will likely surpass last season's school-record total of 153 three-point field goals on Saturday, as the Lady Lions have connected on 150 field goals from outside so far this season, putting the SLC record of 204 set by UTSA and Texas State last season in jeopardy.
The Lady Lions did commit 18 turnovers on Wednesday, but balanced that total with 18 assists. Freshman guard
Kelli Jenkins dished out a game-high six assists, pushing her team-high per game average to 3.3 per game – ninth-best individual total in the SLC. Jenkins and Mitchell (2.8 apg) both rank among the SLC leaders with Jenkins second in the league with a 1.4 assist-to-turnover ratio.
The Lady Lions also out-rebounded the Sugar Bears, 44-31, as senior guard
Bethany Sinclair and junior forward
Zevy Ivory pulled down eight rebounds each. Carlin leads the team and is seventh in the SLC with 7.6 rebounds per game. Senior center
Adonna Weaver has pulled down a team-high 6.3 rebounds per contest in league play. The Lady Lions are allowing a league-low 36.6 rebounds per contest and boast a plus-5.6 rebound per game margin – best in the SLC.
Carlin continues to climb the school's career lists, as she became the seventh student-athlete in school history to break into the top 10 in both scoring and rebounding. With 1,114 points and 556 rebounds, Carlin is 10th on the program's lists in both categories.
Nicholls State (0-17, 0-6 SLC) will be looking for its first victory of the season on Saturday. The Colonels dropped an 87-66 decision to McNeese State on Wednesday, despite a career-high 24 points by senior center Christie Bryant.
Bryant leads the team with 10.4 points and 5.5 rebounds per game. Senior forward Dominique Washington is second in both categories with 9.2 points and 5.1 rebounds per outing. Senior guard Tiffany Jones leads the team with 3.7 assists and 1.9 steals per contest.
Nicholls State is averaging 49.8 points per contest, while allowing opponents 84.4 points per outing. Averaging 34.9 rebounds per game, the Colonels have allowed foes a rebounding average of 45.5. NSU has forced just under 20 turnovers per game, but have turned the ball over 461 times in 17 games – an average of 27.1 per outing.
Southeastern leads the all-time series with Nicholls, 50-13. However, Thibodaux has been a tough place for the Lady Lions to play, losing in three of its last six trips to Stopher Gymnasium, including a 55-50 loss last season.
Following Saturday's game, Southeastern will return home to host Texas State on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the University Center.
