Lady Lions Return Home to Host Central Arkansas

Southeastern looks to improve 9-1 home record

Senior Adonna Weaver is averaging a team-best 6.8 rebounds per game in SLC play
HAMMOND – The Southeastern Louisiana women's basketball team will look to get back into the win column on Wednesday, returning home to host Southland Conference East Division foe Central Arkansas at 7 p.m. in the University Center.

Wednesday's contest between the Lady Lions (10-8, 2-3 SLC) and visiting Sugar Bears (6-12, 2-3 SLC) will be broadcast on the Internet only at www.LionSports.net, where in-game live statistics will also be available. Wednesday's game will also be televised (tape-delay) on the Southeastern Channel (Charter Channel 18).

Southeastern will return home after a pair of narrow road losses last week. On Saturday, the Lady Lions hit 12 three-point field goals, but SFA outscored the Lady Lions, 34-12, in the paint to offset Southeastern's hot outside shooting in a 69-66 Southeastern loss.

Southeastern senior forward Kristy Carlin led Southeastern with 19 points, while sophomore guard Chelsea Hix tied a career-high with 15 points, netting a career-best five threes in Saturday's loss. Carlin also passed former Lady Lion Nakeya Downing for 10th place on the school's career rebounding list. With two points on Wednesday, the Walker product will pass former Lady Lion Sharon Berry for 10th place on the school's career scoring list.

Should Carlin pass Berry, she will become the seventh student-athlete in school history to crack the school's career top 10 in both scoring and rebounding. She will join former Lady Lions Queen Brumfield, Renee Daniels, Pam Cook, Deneka Knowles, Robin Roberts and Sarah Williams – a group that includes five members of the Southeastern Athletics Hall of Fame. Carlin currently has 1,090 points and 554 rebounds in her career.

Carlin leads the Lady Lion scoring attack, ranking third in the SLC with 14.7 points per game. Senior guard Charinee Mitchell (8.1 ppg), junior guard Kim Edmonson (7.8 ppg), junior wing Quantae Thomas (7.5 ppg) and Hix (6.4 ppg) are the other top scoring threats for the Lady Lions, who are averaging 63.2 points per game.

The Lady Lions' top scorers are all proficient from three-point range, as the Lady Lions lead the SLC and rank 12th in the nation with 7.7 three-point field goals per game. Edmonson (1.9 three-point field goals per game), Mitchell (1.8) and Thomas (1.6) all rank among the SLC's most productive outside shooters, while Carlin and Hix are just outside of the league's top 15 with 1.2 treys per game apiece.

With 138 three-point field goals this season, Southeastern will easily erase last season's single-season school record of 153 treys. The Lady Lions are also on pace to surpass the SLC record of 206, set by both UTSA and Texas State a season ago.

Southeastern's gaudy three-point production has helped its point guard corps to pad their assist numbers. Freshman guard Kelli Jenkins leads the team with 3.1 assists per game, followed by Mitchell with 2.8 assists per contest. Both point guards have taken care of the ball well, as the Lady Lions rank third in the SLC in assist-to-turnover ratio. Jenkins, who dished out a career-high seven dimes in Saturday's loss, is third in the conference with a 1.3 assist-to-turnover ratio.

While Southeastern's outside shooting has been a big part of its success this season, the Lady Lions have been the most consistent in the areas of rebounding and defense. Carlin ranks among the league leaders with a team-high 7.9 rebounds per contest. Carlin, senior center Adonna Weaver (4.5 rpg) and junior forward Zevy Ivory (4.3 rpg) are the top rebounders for Southeastern, which is holding opponents to an SLC-low 36.9 rebounds per contest and is ranked second in the conference with a plus-5.1 rebounding margin per game.

Defensively, the Lady Lions have held opponents to a league-low 57.9 points per game and are second with a plus-5.2 scoring margin per game. Southeastern has held nine of its opponents to under 60 points, including four under 50 points. Senior guard Bethany Sinclair is averaging a league-best 2.8 steals per game in conference play.

However, for Southeastern to avoid its first three-game losing streak of the season, the Lady Lions must correct several areas of concern, primarily limiting turnovers. The Lady Lions are committing 17.2 turnovers per game, including 19.5 turnovers per game in their eight losses.

Though Southeastern is still among the league leaders with a free throw percentage of just under 70 percent, the Lady Lions are hitting just 62.7 percent during league play. Southeastern has hit less than 50 percent of its charity stripe attempts in two of its last four games.

The Lady Lions will have to limit miscues against a resourceful Central Arkansas squad, which has bounced back from a 0-3 league start to win its last two contests. The Sugar Bears gutted out a hard-fought 71-69 home win over McNeese State on Saturday. Freshman guard Destinee Rogers led five UCA student-athletes in double figures with 14 points in the victory.

UCA features a balanced offensive attack, led by Rogers' team-high 9.5 point per game scoring average. Sophomore forward Jayme Adair (9.2 ppg) and senior center Chorcelle Taylor (8.2 ppg) are the other top scorers for the Sugar Bears. Taylor is averaging a team-high 12.8 points per game and shooting a league-high 60.9 percent from the field during league play. Rogers leads the team with 2.8 assists per game.

UCA has been strong on the defensive end, leading the SLC with 4.4 blocked shots per contest. Taylor is fourth in the SLC with 1.7 blocked shots per contest. Junior forward Mariesha Piggee is sixth in the league with 1.8 steals per outing.

UCA is committing 21.4 turnovers per game, while shooting just 29 percent from three-point range. Sophomore guard Laura Beth Anderson leads the team with 4.6 rebounds per game, as the Sugar Bears have been out-rebounded by 3.5 boards per contest.

Southeastern is 2-3 all-time versus Central Arkansas, which joined the Southland Conference prior to the 2006-07 season. The Sugar Bears have won the past three meetings between the two teams and were the only SLC East team to sweep the Lady Lions last season.

Following Wednesday's game, Southeastern will return to the road to face Nicholls State at 2 p.m. on Saturday in Thibodaux.
