Fall Practice Report No. 5

HAMMOND, La. – The bats are starting to warm up for Southeastern Louisiana as teams split a pair of intrasquad scrimmages Saturday and Sunday at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.

Team GATA ran its record this fall to 4-1 with a rain-shortened win Saturday, rallying for the 6-5 victory. Three runs in the bottom of the sixth pushed GATA in front, but Team Mamba clawed back to tie it in the seventh on an RBI single by Jacob Burke. An RBI groundout in the bottom of the inning plated the go-ahead run.

Rain and lightning brought the scrimmage to a halt before the eighth. Cole Hoskins (1-0), a transfer from Grand Canyon, earned the win. The senior right-hander struck out one in 1.2 innings of relief work. Daniel Dugas (0-2) suffered the loss, allowing two runs – one earned – in two innings pitched.

Burke (3-for-4), Evan Keller (2-for-3) and Nick Ray (2-for-3) each turned in multi-hit performances at the plate with Burke also driving in three, including two on his first home run of the fall.

Sunday, Mamba (2-4) averted a weekend sweep by banging out 14 hits on the way to a 10-5 win. Falling behind twice in the first three innings, Mamba kept a steady approach at the plate and scored in every inning except the third and sixth.

Keller (3-for-5), Bryce Grizzaffi (3-for-5), Christian Garcia (2-for-3) Nick Ray (2-for-4), Rhett Rosevear (2-for-4) and Matt Taylor (2-for-4) all produced multiple hits in Sunday's scrimmage. Garcia blasted his first homer of the fall and Ray drove in three. Kenneth Bell, III drove in a pair with a 1-for-3 day at the plate.

Will Kinzeler (1-0) earned the win, logging four hitless, shutout innings in relief. The freshman right-hander from Mandeville, Louisiana walked one and struck out six batters. Reliever Antonio Buckley (0-1) suffered the loss, allowing two runs – one earned – in 2.1 innings of work.
