HAMMOND, La. – Brody Capps' seventh-inning grand slam put the finishing touches Saturday on the third run-rule victory of the week for the Southeastern Louisiana University baseball team, defeating Houston Christian, 12-1, in Southland Conference action at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.
With the win over the Huskies (18-23, 10-13 SLC), Southeastern (27-17, 15-8 SLC) moved 10 games over .500 for the first time this season. SLU also remains tied with Lamar (23-20, 15-8 SLC) atop the conference standings following the Cardinals' 7-2 win Saturday at New Orleans.
A strong pitching performance from right-hander
Blake Lobell (3-1) gave the Lion bats time to generate more than enough run support. The senior from Holden, Louisiana tossed his second complete game of the year, holding HCU to one run in seven innings of work.
Southeastern took a 1-0 lead in the second on a bases-loaded groundout and then added three more runs in the third, thanks in part to a bases-loaded walk to
Blaise Priester and a two-run single by
Brooks Wright.
Alex Perry delivered a two-run single in the fourth and Priester launched his eighth home run of the season leading off the fifth, extending the Lions' lead to 7-0.
Consecutive two-out hits in the sixth produced the Huskies' lone run of the game.
Perry led off the seventh with his team-leading 13
th homer of the season. SLU would eventually load the bases again with two outs, setting up Capps' dramatic shot. For Capps, it was his 11
th homer of the season and second grand slam.
The Lions have hit four grand slams this season, with
Connor Cuff and
Peyton Woods having also provided the ultimate offensive boost.
Capps (3-for-4), Perry (3-for-3) and Priester (3-for-3) turned in multiple hits apiece for Southeastern.
Lobell earned the win. HCU starting pitcher David Lopez (4-3) suffered the loss, allowing four runs – all earned – in three innings of work.
