HAMMOND, La. – Jones County Junior College point guard Breonca Ducksworth will continue her academic and athletic endeavors as a member of the Southeastern Louisiana women's basketball program, SLU head coach
Ayla Guzzardo announced on Thursday.
Ducksworth, who hails from Taylorsville, Mississippi, will have two years remaining. The 5-4 guard is the sixth member of the 2019-20 signing class.
The West Jones High School native joins early signees 6-3 post Bren'naisa Adams (Thibodaux, Louisiana), 5-10 guard Hailey Giaratano (Ponchatoula, Louisiana), 5-9 guard Daija Harvey (Donaldsonville, Louisiana), 5-9 guard Alexius Horne (Baton Rouge, Louisiana) and 5-7 guard Jaylen Huderson (Slidell, Louisiana).
The six newcomers will enhance a Lady Lion roster that returns a solid nucleus that is led by All-Southland and All-Louisiana guard
Celica Sterling, as well as
Charliee Dugas,
Caitlyn Williams and
Tyler Morrison.
Ducksworth comes to Hammond after averaging 9.6 points and 5.0 assists per game for the Lady Bobcats, who finished 28-3 overall. She represented JCJC at the MACJC All-Star Game, scoring 15 points for the winning South team. As a senior at West Jones High School, Ducksworth was named co-District 5-5A Most Valuable Player.
"Breonca is something our program has been missing – a dynamic point guard with the ability to score at will," Guzzardo commented. "Her defensive pressure in the backcourt will be a good fit with her fellow guards and move us closer to our goal of being the Southland Conference's best defensive team.
"Breonca comes to us from a premier Jones County Junior College program and has been very well coached," Guzzardo added. "We expect her to have an immediate positive impact on our program as we work towards a Southland Conference championship."
The 2019-20 Lady Lions will open their season in early November.
