HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana women's basketball team will return home to host in-state and Southland Conference foe Nicholls Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. in the University Center.
The game between the Lady Lions (8-11, 3-5 Southland) and the defending Southland Tournament champion Colonels (11-9, 5-3 Southland) will be the first of two in Hammond on Saturday, as the SLU-Nicholls men's game tips off at 4 p.m. Both games will serve as the Southland Conference Games of the Week and air on ESPN3.
Saturday will also be Youth Day in the University Center, as all fans 12 and under will receive free admission. Any fans with a valid middle school, junior high or high school ID will receive a $3 ticket.
Tyler Morrison will be Saturday's Spotlight Player of the Game. The first 150 fans to the women's game will receive a trading card featuring the Baton Rouge native courtesy of PRIDE.
Southeastern will be looking to snap a two-game losing skid on Saturday. On Wednesday, the Lady Lions fell, 94-63, at Sam Houston State. 31 turnovers and a relentless Bearkat attack that earned 43 free throws was too much for the Lady Lions to overcome.
Jaclyn Scholvin (18 points),
Charliee Dugas (16 points) and
Celica Sterling (10 points) all reached double figures for SLU. That same trio enters Saturday's matinee as the top three scorers on the squad. Sterling is third in the Southland with a team-high 16.1 points per game, followed by Scholvin (9.5 ppg) and Dugas (8.3 ppg).
For one of the few times this season, Sterling won't be the leading scorer on the court on Saturday. Nicholls' Cassidy Barrios leads the Southland with 20.5 points per game. Barrios is one of two players averaging in double figures, along with Tykeria Williams (10.3 ppg).
The only player in the Southland averaging a double-double, Barrios is arguably the league's most complete player. The Colonel senior leads the Southland with 10.9 rebounds per game, while also ranking third in the league with 4.5 assists per game.
Caitlyn Williams leads SLU and is fifth in the conference with 7.3 rebounds per contest, while Morrison (3.5 apg, 6th) and Scholvin (3.4 apg, 8th) represent Southeastern on the Southland assist leaderboard.
Barrios also fuels a Nicholls defense that is allowing 65.6 points per contest, ranking seventh in the league with 22 blocked shots. Scholvin's activity on the defensive end (6th in Southland with 2.2 steals per game) highlights a SLU team that is yielding 64.5 points per game and forcing 18.2 turnovers per outing.
Saturday will mark the 82nd all-time meeting between the two schools with SLU holding a 58-23 advantage. Though the Lady Lions hold a sizable lead in the long-running rivalry, Nicholls has won four of the last five meetings. Last season, the two teams split the season series with each winning on the other's home floor. Saturday will be the first of two meetings between the Southland foes, as SLU will make the trek to Thibodaux on March 9.
Following Saturday's contest, Southeastern will return home to host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the University Center. The Southeastern Channel will televise Wednesday's women's game on a tape delay and the game will be streamed on the Southland Digital Network at
www.Southland.org/live and via the Southland apps available for iPhone, Android, Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV and Roku.
General admission tickets will be priced at $4 on Wednesday in honor of National Women in Sports Day. The first 150 fans will receive a trading card featuring Dugas, Wednesday's Spotlight Player of the Game, courtesy of PRIDE.
Wednesday is also a Cane's Challenge game. If the Lady Lions score 50 or more points versus the Islanders, fans can redeem their game ticket of student coupon at their local participating Raising Cane's Chicken Fingers to receive a free combo with the purchase of another of equal or greater value.
