HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana women's basketball team will continue its season-opening five-game road swing on Sunday, facing UL Lafayette at 4 p.m. in the Cajundome.

The game between the Lady Lions (0-2) and the host Ragin' Cajuns (2-1) will be televised live on ESPN+. The contest will also be heard live in the Hammond area on KSLU-FM (90.9) and online at www.LionSports.net/listenlive. Live stats, provided by USM, can also be accessed on the women's basketball schedule page at www.LionSports.net.

Southeastern will be looking to bounce back from a 62-54 loss to Southern Miss on Wednesday night. The Lady Lions showed some progress in their second game of 2019-20, but USM outscored SLU, 41-25, in the second and third quarters, giving itself enough cushion to hold off a fourth quarter rally.

In the loss to the Golden Eagles, senior guard Celica Sterling led the Lady Lions with 16 points. She was joined in double figures by Jyar Francis and Alexius Horne, who finished with 13 and 10 points, respectively.

Horne also doubled as SLU's top distributor, dishing out a team-high three assists. Aminat Jubril grabbed seven rebounds in the loss, while Francis tallied four steals, as Southeastern forced Southern Miss into 22 turnovers.

Sterling is tops on the team with 16.5 points per game. The returning All-Southland and All-Louisiana player is joined in the team's top five scorers by Francis (13.0 ppg), Horne (9.5 ppg), Charliee Dugas (6.5 ppg) and Jubril (5.5 ppg). The Lady Lions are averaging 59.5 points per game thus far this season.

Southeastern heads into Sunday's matinee with a minus-8.0 rebounding margin. Jubril (9.5 rpg) and Caitlyn Williams (6.0 rpg) have been SLU's most productive performers on the glass.

Opponents are averaging 70.0 points and committing 21.5 turnovers per game versus the Lady Lions. Sterling, Francis and Dugas all share the team lead with four steals apiece.

SLU will be facing a Ragin' Cajun team that is coming off a 75-55 victory over McNeese on Thursday in Lafayette. Ty'Reona Doucet and Brandi Williams shared game-high honors with 14 points each, as UL Lafayette forced 20 Cowgirl turnovers and held the visitors to 33.9 percent (20-for-59) shooting from the floor.

UL Lafayette opened the season with a 67-51 win over Loyola (La.), before falling, 77-73, at Sam Houston State. Doucet (13.7 ppg) and Williams (12.0 ppg) are the top scorers for a Ragin' Cajun team that is scoring 71.7 points per game. Jasmine Thomas paces the squad with 3.0 assists per game.

The Ragin' Cajuns have one more rebound than the opposition this season. Doucet leads the team with 8.0 rebounds per game.

Opponents are also averaging 61.0 points and committing 19.7 turnovers per game versus UL Lafayette. Skyler Goodwin has a team-high five steals, while Doucet has blocked four shots.

"We have to be able to defend better (than at Southern Miss on Wednesday)," Southeastern head coach Ayla Guzzardo said. "On the offensive end, we need to be more balanced and have four or five players in double figures, instead of one or two. This will be a tough challenge, especially for our backcourt. We just need to stay the course and follow the game plan and we'll be fine."

Southeastern is 29-17 all-time versus the in-state rival Ragin' Cajuns, though UL Lafayette has won the last six meetings between the two schools. The Lady Lions and Ragin' Cajuns last met on Dec. 13, 2017 with UL Lafayette taking a 68-56 victory in Hammond.
