HAMMOND, La. – Southern Miss pounded out a season-high 20 hits off Southeastern Louisiana pitching Tuesday as the Golden Eagles cruised to a 12-4 win over the Lions at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.
Despite picking up its most hits (nine) since the calendar turned to April, Southeastern (25-16) took its sixth loss in the last seven games.
The Golden Eagles (25-11) broke open a scoreless game in the third, batting around on the way to scoring six runs. The outburst chased starting pitcher
Mason Knopp from the game and Southern Miss never looked back.
Southeastern used six pitchers in the game, tying the most used by the Lions in a game this season.
Payton Robinson worked two scoreless innings in relief and
Gage Pickett did not allow a run as he worked the final 1.1 innings.
Down 6-0, the Lions would not go away quietly.
Bryce Steckler led off the third with a triple down the first-base line, his team-leading fourth of the season. He scored on
Nathan Pilutti's one-out double to right-center field.
The Golden Eagles came back with two more runs in the fourth, but Southeastern took one back in the bottom of the inning.
Daniel Wasinger and
Kyle Schimpf knocked back-to-back singles to open up the frame. Wasinger advanced to third on
Trey Morgan's flyout to right and scored on
Brennan Breaud's sacrifice fly to left.
Southeastern pulled a run closer, 8-3, in the fifth.
Cody Grosse led off the inning with a triple to left-center field and scored on Pilutti's groundout to short.
The teams traded runs in the seventh.
Steckler knocked a one-out double to right-center in the bottom of the inning. After Grosse drew a walk, Pilutti drove an RBI single to right.
Three more runs in the eight by the Golden Eagles put the game out of reach.
Jarod Wright (3-1) earned the win, allowing three runs on six hits and one walk in five innings. The Southern Miss right-hander struck out four in his first start of the season.
Knopp (3-2) suffered the loss, allowing six runs in his two-inning stint.
Five different players for Southern Miss enjoyed a three-hit performance, while Pilutti (2-for-4), Steckler (2-for-3) and Wasinger (2-for-3) turned in multi-hit performances for the Lions.
Southeastern returns to Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field for a pair of games against rival Nicholls Friday and Saturday. Both games start at 6 p.m.
