BATON ROUGE, La. – Southeastern Louisiana's rally in the seventh inning came up short Sunday and the Lions fell to No. 14-ranked LSU 4-2 at Alex Box Stadium, Skip Bertman Field.
With
Preston Faulkner on first base after being hit by a pitch,
Kyle Schimpf smacked a pinch-hit home run to right field, pulling the Lions (7-5) within a pair. The home run chased LSU (8-4) reliever Trent Vietmeier from the game.
Trenon Troclair worked a two-out walk off new LSU pitcher Nick Bush and
Brennan Breaud doubled down the right-field line, putting a pair in scoring position.
Cody Grosse, who had singled off Bush in Wednesday's 5-4 Southeastern win, lined out to left field to end the inning.
The Tigers built their lead with solo homers in the first and third innings, tacking on an unearned run in the third.
LSU scored its final run in the fifth.
Southeastern reliever
Jared Biddy inherited runners on the corners with no outs. Antoine Duplantis, who homered in the first, flied out to deep center field to plate the runner from third.
Biddy worked 3.1 scoreless in long relief for the Lions, fanning one.
LSU freshman Ma'Khail Hilliard (3-0) earned the win in relief, working four scoreless innings and retiring the final 11 batters he faced. Austin Bain worked a scoreless ninth for his first save.
Kade Granier (1-1) suffered the loss, allowing all four runs (three earned) in four innings.
