HAMMOND, La. – Southeastern Louisiana rallied for a 7-6 win Tuesday at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field, defeating Toledo for the second time in four days.
The Lions (8-5) fell behind 2-0 early to Toledo (3-8), but
Taylor Schwaner got Southeastern headed in the right direction in the second inning.
Schwaner, a senior from Slidell, Louisiana, smashed his first home run of the season, a one-out, solo shot to right-center field to cut the Rockets' lead in half.
Toledo starter Axel Bueter, the first of eight pitchers used in the game by the Rockets, hit
Brennan Breaud and
Cody Grosse with pitches to open up the third. Reliever Jordan Stout walked right fielder
Nathan Pilutti before surrendering a two-run double to
Drew Avans. Pilutti scored on a groundout to short off the bat of Schwaner.
Southeastern added a run in the fifth, but Toledo kept pace with a run of its own in the sixth.
The Lions added a crucial run in the seventh.
Avans singled to center, stole second base and advanced to third on Schwaner's single to center. He scored on a double-play ground ball, putting Southeastern up 6-3.
Toledo, which had already knocked a pair of solo home runs in the game and several loud foul balls, greeted reliever
Bryce Tassin with a game-tying, three-run blast to right in the eighth. Tassin inherited a pair of runners from
Evan Hileman with two outs in the inning.
Southeastern set about regaining the lead immediately.
Evan Pace, a junior catcher from Zachary, Louisiana, led off the eighth by pulling a double inside the third-base bag. After
Trenon Trosclair sacrificed Pace to third, he scored on Breaud's single through the left side of a drawn-in infield.
Tassin (1-0), a redshirt sophomore from Walker, Louisiana, worked around a one-out walk in the ninth to pick up the victory. Joey Prechtel (0-1), the seventh of eight pitchers for the Rockets, was tagged with the loss.
Avans (3-for-4), Breaud (2-for-4) and Schwaner (2-for-3) each turned in multi-hit performances as the Lion pounded out 10 hits.
Peyton Lee, a junior pitcher from Picayune, Mississippi, held down the Rocket bats for three shutout innings in relief of starter
Jace Nini, retiring the final eight batters that he faced.
A replay of the Southeastern Channel's game broadcast, which streamed live on the Southland Digital Network, will air Thursday at 7:30 p.m. on Cox Sports TV.
Southeastern travels to New Orleans, Louisiana, to face Tulane (6-6) at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium. Junior righty
