Lions Bat Around Twice in Comeback Win at Tulane

NEW ORLEANS, La. – Southeastern Louisiana batted around twice Wednesday, wiping out a multi-run deficit both times on the way to defeating Tulane, 13-12, at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.

Down 5-1, the Lions (9-5) sent 11 batters to the plate in the fifth inning, the first eight of which reached safely against Tulane (6-7) pitching.

Designated hitter Trey Morgan, a sophomore from St. Francisville, Louisiana, got the inning rolling with a single up the middle. He scored all the way from first on Bryce Steckler's double into the left-field corner. Steckler scored on Trenon Trosclair's bloop single to left.

Trosclair stole second base and Green Wave starting pitcher Chase Solesky walked Brennan Breaud for the second time in the game. With runners and first and second, Cody Grosse chopped an infield hit to chase Solesky from the game.

Reliever Ben White walked Taylor Schwaner to force in a run. Left fielder Drew Avans, a senior from Alabaster, Alabama, pulled an RBI single through the right side to tie up the game. The Lions took the lead on Daniel Wasinger's single to left.

Kyle Schimpf and Morgan would both ground out, bringing in two more runs before Steckler grounded out to end the frame.

The lead did not hold up for long. Tulane tied the game with three in the sixth and regained the lead with three more runs in the seventh.

Southeastern entered the eighth with just six hits, all in the fifth, and trailing 11-8, but once again, the Lions mounted a time-consuming rally.

Morgan led off with an inconspicuous fly ball to center field. What should have been a routine out turned into the start of a game-winning rally. Tulane center fielder Grant Witherspoon lost the ball in the lights, allowing Morgan to reach second. He advanced to third on a fly ball to right field off the bat of Steckler and scored on Trosclair's sacrifice fly to left.

After Breaud doubled, Tulane coach Travis Jewett pulled White in favor of left-hander Ross Massey. The southpaw walked Cody Grosse, the only batter he faced. Reliever Trent Johnson (1-1) surrendered an RBI single to Schwaner and then hit Avans with a pitch to load the bases.

Left-hander Sam Bjorngjeld, who had not walked a batter in seven innings of work this season, walked Wasinger to force in the tying run and hit Schimpf with a pitch to give the Lions the lead once again. Morgan, back at the plate for the second time in the same inning – for the second time in the game, drew a bases-loaded walk to add what proved to be an important insurance run.

Freshman right-hander Will Warren retired the first two batters in the ninth before issuing back-to-back walks and surrendering an RBI single.

Carlisle Koestler, a redshirt junior from Vicksburg, Mississippi, entered the game with a one-run lead and runners on the corners, getting a fly out to end the game. Koestler earned his first save of the season.

Reliever Trey Shaffer (1-0), a freshman from Biloxi, Mississippi, earned the win, working 1.2 scoreless. The left-hander allowed one hit and one walk, striking out three. Johnson was tagged with the loss, facing two batters without retiring either. They both scored.

Eight of the nine batters in the Southeastern starting lineup recorded a hit and seven drove in at least one run. Schwaner, Wasinger, Schimpf, Morgan and Trosclair drove in multiple runs, while Breaud, Grosse, Schwaner, Avans and Morgan scored multiple times.

The victory extends Southeastern's win streak to five straight over the Green Wave.

Southeastern returns to Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field to open Southland Conference play Friday at 6 p.m., hosting New Orleans in the annual Pontchartrain Bowl series.
