HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana women's basketball team fell cold down the stretch and fell to Southland Conference foe Sam Houston State, 57-52, in league women's basketball action Wednesday night in the University Center.
 
Southeastern (3-16, 2-6 Southland) had its two-game winning streak snapped thanks to a cold shooting night that saw the Lady Lions make just 25.8 percent (17-for-66) of their field goal attempts. Southeastern forced Sam Houston State (4-13, 1-7 Southland) into 22 turnovers, but the Bearkats outscored the hosts, 17-8, in the final quarter to snap a 10-game losing streak.
 
After holding the visiting Bearkats to 16.7 percent (2-for-12) shooting and five points in the opening quarter, Southeastern led 25-18 at the half and look poised to run away with the game early in the third quarter. A three-pointer by junior guard Ashailee Brailey gave the Lady Lions a 34-22 advantage with 8:19 left in the period.
 
Sam Houston State kept hanging around and would not allow the Lady Lions to pull away. SLU went into the final quarter with a tenuous 44-40 advantage.
 
A three by freshman forward Caitlyn Williams gave SLU a 49-44 lead with 7:04 left. Unfortunately for the Lady Lions, they would not score again until the final possession of the game, as Sam Houston State took control with a 12-0 run to secure the victory.
 
A three by junior guard Jaclyn Scholvin cut the Bearkat lead to 56-52 with 17 seconds left, but Southeastern would not get any closer, as SHSU sophomore guard Jenniffer Oramas iced the game with a free throw in the final seconds.
 
Scholvin and sophomore guard Charliee Dugas shared team-high honors with 10 points each for SLU, while Caitlyn Williams chipped in with nine. Sophomore guard Tyler Morrison led the Lady Lions with eight rebounds, five assists and six steals.
 
Oramas led the Bearkats with 24 points to go with eight rebounds. Junior center Lydia Baxter paced SHSU with 14 rebounds off the bench, as she, junior forward Ashleigh Cooper and senior guard Jada Bellew pitched in with eight points each.
