Young Set To Compete at World Championships

    HAMMOND, La. – Former Southeastern Louisiana standout Alex Young will take the world stage Wednesday afternoon when he competes in the semifinals of the hammer throw at the IAAF World Championships in London, England.

    Young is scheduled to compete at 2:50 p.m. Central Time. Each competitor will get three attempts in the semifinals. Throwers from the two qualifiers who meet the 75-meter mark or finish in the top 12 advance to the finals, scheduled for 2:30 p.m. on Friday. Live results are available at www.iaaf.org.

    Young, who completed his Southeastern career this spring with a second-place finish in the hammer at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Championships, is the first Lion to be chosen to represent the United States in the IAAF World Championships. The native of Nashville, Tennessee won the weight throw at the 2017 Indoor National Championships in March and the hammer throw at the USATF Outdoor Championships in June before throwing a career-best 244 feet, .75 inches his summer.

    Young, who became Southeastern's first NCAA Division I national championship when he claimed the weight throw title at the 2016 Indoor Championships, is one of three four-time All-Americans in Lion history. The 2016-17 Southeastern Male Athlete of the Year and LSWA All-Louisiana Field Athlete of the Year is also a two-time Academic All-American.
