SLU Earns Five Golds at Pelican Relays

The Lions ended the meet with 14 podium finishes Saturday

BATON ROUGE, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University men's and women's track & field teams took part in the Pelican Relays at Southern University this weekend, ending the two-day meet with five first-place finishes at A. W. Mumford Stadium Saturday. The Lions totaled 14 podium finishes at the Pelican Relays, surpassing last year's mark of 11 at the 2025 Pelican Relays.
 
On the women's side, Breanna Becerra, Miriam Kauer, and Ava Pitarro each claimed first place in their respective track events. Becerra's first-place performance in the 400-meter dash included a personal-best time of 56.22, the seventh-best mark in the Southland Conference before the conclusion of the weekend. In her first time competing in the 800-meter run at the collegiate level, the senior Kauer posted a first-place time of 2:16.42. Pitarro's 5:05.07 mark in the 1,500-meter run gave her first place, too.
 
On the men's side, Donald Butler took first in the high jump with a mark of 2.07 meters (6'9"). Josh-Ty Brown also claimed a first-place finish, winning the shot put with a toss of 17.10 meters (56'1").
 
The Lions had several student-athletes finish within the top three in their respective events over the weekend. For the SLU women, Zoe Wilson earned third in the 400-meter dash with a 59.11 time. In the women's javelin throw, Bailey Babin claimed second with a mark of 36.64 meters (120'2").
 
For the Southeastern men, Matthew Berthelot ended the 800-meter run in third with a personal-best time of 1:59.77. Tanner Salsman took second place in the 1,500-meter run, completing the race with a 4:07.63 time. In the discus throw, Porter Gibson and Micah Miller notched second and third place with throws of 51.34 meters (168'5") and 49.25 meters (161'6"), respectively. Gibson also took third in the shot put with a toss of 15.50 meters (50'10"). In the javelin throw, Gabriel Lim launched for a distance of 57.47 meters (188'6") to take third. Trey Faherty's pole vault of 4.30 meters (14'1") gave SLU another third-place finish.
 
For its next meet, SLU will return to the Southeastern Track Complex to host the Strawberry Relays, Friday, Apr. 17.
