SLU Opens Road Swing With Doubleheader at Alcorn

Lady Lions, Lady Braves meet Tuesday at 1 p.m. in Lorman, Mississippi

HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana softball team will open a five-game road swing with a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday at Alcorn State.

The twin bill between the Lady Lions (12-15) and the host Lady Braves (6-17) will start at 1 p.m. Live stats, provided by Alcorn, will be accessible via the softball schedule page at www.LionSports.net. Fans can also follow SLU Athletics on Twitter at www.twitter.com/sluathletics for in-game updates.

Southeastern heads to Lorman, Mississippi riding the momentum of a Southland Conference series sweep of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi last weekend. Dominating pitching performances by juniors Rachel Hayes and Lacey Hill highlighted the first two wins.

In the finale, junior Kalyn Watts hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the fourth to give the Lady Lions the lead. Freshman Tanner Wright tossed 3.1 innings of shutout relief to secure the 5-2 victory.

Southeastern heads into Tuesday's action with a .246 team batting average. Junior outfielder Kinsey Nichols leads the team with a .375 batting average, followed by junior catcher Carlie Whittington (.368), sophomore shortstop Jaquelyn Ramon (.281), freshman designated player Mattie Ort (.274) and junior infielder Mahalia Gibson (.273).

Gibson and Watts share the team lead with two home runs each. Gibson's 16 RBI are also good for team-high honors.

SLU also leads the Southland Conference with 75 stolen bases through the season's first 25 games. Ramon leads the league with 22 steals, followed closely by junior outfielder Maddie Edmonston, who has 21 steals in her debut Southeastern campaign. Edmonston and Ramon also rank atop the roster with 19 and 17 runs scored, respectively.

The dominant pitching performance versus the Islanders lowered the Lady Lions' team earned run average of 3.83. Hill (5-5, 3.27 ERA) and Hayes (4-5, 2.82 ERA) have shared the majority of the work in the circle, while Wright (2-1, 4.97 ERA), freshman Alley McDonald (0-2, 6.49 ERA, 1 save), sophomore Caitlyn VanHemelryck (0-2, 4.61 ERA), freshman Ali McCoy (1-0, 6.00 ERA) and senior Kasey Nielson (0-0, 2.42 ERA, 1 save) have all seen action in the circle.

The Lady Lions will be facing an Alcorn lineup that has a .304 team batting average. Jessica Crum is the top hitter for the Lady Braves, leading the team with a .483 batting average, six home runs and 28 RBI.

Alcorn State enters Tuesday's games with a 6.23 staff ERA. Madi Creed (2-4, 5.01 ERA), Robin Harrison (2-4, 4.74 ERA), Jazmin Castillo (2-4, 6.67 ERA) and Ambria Dorsey (0-5, 10.50 ERA, 1 save) have all seen significant time in the circle for ASU.

Following Tuesday's action, Southeastern will head to Nicholls for a three-game Southland Conference series. The series opens with a 6 p.m. contest on Friday and concludes with a 12 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday.
