Lions 2nd After Two Rounds at Southland Championships

MCKINNEY, Texas – Southeastern Louisiana jumped out to the first-round lead and is in second place following the second round of the Southland Conference Men's Golf Championships being held at the Stonebridge Ranch Country Club.

Southeastern was the lone team to shoot below par in the first round on Monday, finishing with a 1-under 287 to take a two-stroke lead on Abilene Christian. The Lions slipped to a 15-over 303 in the afternoon round and is at 14-over 590 for the tournament.

McNeese State, tied for third with Sam Houston State with a 9-over 297 in the first round, fired a 6-under in the second round and is 11 strokes ahead of the Lions at 3-over 579. Sam Houston is third at 16-over 592 and is followed by Lamar (594, +18) and Abilene Christian (603, +27).

"We played great in the morning and horrible in the afternoon," Southeastern head coach Jake Narro said. "The good news is we are still in second place but the bad news is we have some ground to make up. But on this course that can be made up fairly quickly because there is a lot of trouble and a lot of bad places to hit it."

The tournament was scheduled for 18 holes each on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday but the threat of more inclement weather later in the week forced a 36-hole rainy opening day. The tournament concludes Tuesday with opening tee times at 7:30 a.m. Live scoring, provided by the Southland Conference, will be available at www.LionSports.net.

The tournament champion receives the conference's automatic bid into the NCAA Regionals. The individual medalist also qualifies for the NCAAs.

Lion senior Lawrence Allan is tied for sixth with Sam Houston's Jake McCrory at 1-over 145. Junior James Anstiss, who was tied with Abilene Christian's Garrett Glanton after a first-round 4-under 68, is tied for eighth with Stephen F. Austin's Angelo Leyvani with a 2-over 146. Freshman William Meyers shot a 7-over 151 and is tied for 22nd with Central Arkansas' Louis Tomlinson. A shot back and tied for 24th is senior Eamon Bradley at 8-over 152. And tied for 28th at 9-over 153 is junior Paul Obermann.

McNeese State's Martin Eriksson holds a four-stroke lead with a 5-under 139. Lamar's Mans Berglund is second at 1-under 143. New Orleans' Erik Dege, Sam Houston's Andrew Ertel and Incarnate Word's Austin Wylie are all tied for third at even-par 144.

Allan was at even-par 72 following the first round. He was at 3-under following birdies at No. 2, 6, 7 and 13 before recording bogeys on 14, 15 and 1. He opened the second round with a birdie at No. 3 and added birdies at 9 and 11 before bogeying 16, 17 and 18 to finish at 1-over 73.

Anstiss birdied all four par-5s in the first round. Birdies at 3, 6 and 7 moved him to 3-under before he made a bogey at 11. He rallied with birdies at 13 and 16 to finish at 4-under 68. He had one birdie, at No. 8, in a 6-over 78 second round.

Meyers birdied No. 6 in the first round but was at 2-over before carding an eagle-3 on the par-5 13th. He finished the round at 1-over 73. He shot a 6-over 78 in the second round with birdies at 6 and 17.

Bradley had three birdies in a 6-over 78 first round, at No. 3, 7 and 8. He moved up 12 spots in the second round with a 2-over 74 that included birdies at No. 7 and No. 15.

Obermann had birdies at 3, 5, 10 and 15 in his opening-round 2-over 74. He birdied No. 3 again in shooting a 7-over 79 in the second round.

"We all have to go out and shoot under par tomorrow," Narro said. "We're capable of doing it and if we do, we're capable of scaring them."
