FRISCO, Texas – Southeastern Louisiana junior
Steven Barze received his second honor in as many days for his record-setting Lion debut at the LSU Purple Tiger Invitational on Friday.
Barze was named the Southland Conference's Men's Field Athlete of the Week on Wednesday. On Tuesday, Barze received national recognition as the Ponchatoula, Louisiana native earned NCAA Division I Men's National Athlete of the Week honors by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
Barze shattered the school record in winning the long jump with a mark of 26 feet (7.92 meters) on his first attempt as a Lion. The jump broke the previous record of 25-04 set by Southeastern Hall of Famer David Bennett in the early 1990s. The mark also moved to the top of this season's National Descending Order List.
Barze became the first Southeastern athlete to receive Southland field athlete of the week honors since
Brett Olsen did it during the outdoor season for the week of April 15, 2015. He was the first to receive indoor recognition since
Alex Young for the week of Feb. 4, 2015.
Southeastern's
Dontrell Lyons (men's track athlete of the week,
Jermisha Frazier (women's field athlete) and
Nakiya Smith (women's track athlete) received honorable mention recognition in their respective categories. Sam Houston swept those three awards with middle distance runner Jeffrey Moore, hurdler/sprinter Danielle Demas and thrower Ashley Jenkins, respectively.
Southeastern returns to Baton Rouge Saturday to compete at the LSU Bayou Bengal Invitational. The meet is scheduled to get underway at 10 a.m.
