Box ScoreHAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana women's tennis team picked up its second straight victory to open the 2015 season, blanking Southern, 4-0, in non-conference action Friday afternoon at the Southeastern Tennis Complex.
With the victory, SLU improved to 2-0 on the young season. Southern fell to 1-3 overall with the loss.
"We were very pleased with the effort today," Southeastern head coach
Jason Hayes said. "What I really liked seeing is that we played much smarter than we did (in 5-2 win over Alcorn) yesterday."
Southeastern opened the match by taking the doubles point. On the No. 1 court, junior
Renee Villarreal and freshman
Anna Bryukhova shutout the Southern pair of Darnesha Moore and Gabriella Moore, 6-0. At No. 2, the SLU freshman pair of
Lucia Bustamante and
Dany Raygadas were too much for the Southern duo of Nicki Neal and Laura Syori.
Villarreal moved to 2-0 at the top singles court, defeating Syori, 6-1, 6-4. At No. 2, Bryukhova picked up her first singles victory at a Lion with a 6-3, 6-3 triumph over Darnesha Moore. Bustamante (2-0) closed out the match with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Morgan Taylor on the No. 4 court.
Southeastern will be back in action on Feb. 20, hosting Southern Miss for a 4 p.m. match.
