HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana women's basketball team will be back in action on Saturday, facing Central Arkansas at 2 p.m. in the Farris Center.
The game between the Lady Lions (7-19, 3-12 Southland) and the host Sugar Bears (16-11, 9-6 Southland) will be broadcast live in the Hammond area on KSLU-FM (90.9) and on the Internet at
www.LionSports.net, where live stats and video, provided by UCA, will be available.
With three games left in the regular season, SLU is not mathematically eliminated from postseason contention, but its season-long current seven-game losing streak has all but eliminated the margin for error. The Lady Lions are two games out of eighth place and the top eight teams will compete in the league tournament, scheduled for March 12-15 at the Merrell Center in Katy, Texas.
On Thursday, Southeastern built a 17-point first half lead, but was outscored, 43-22, in the second half in a 71-60 loss at Northwestern State that dropped the Lady Lions to 0-13 on the road this season. In the loss, senior forward
Annessa De La Cruz scored a season-high 16 points on five for seven shooting from behind the arc, while freshman guard
Taylin Underwood and junior forward
Nanna Pool added 14 points apiece. Senior forward
Jameika Hoskins led SLU with eight rebounds, while senior guard
Elizabeth Styles had a game-high eight assists.
Pool leads SLU with 11.3 points per game, while senior guard
Symone Miller joins her in double figures with 10.1 points per contest. Miller (24 points away) and Styles (31 points away) are both chasing 1,000 career points.
Styles also remains atop the Southland Conference with 6.4 assists per game. The Savannah, Georgia native is fourth in school history with 483 career assists and is within striking distance of becoming the first Lady Lion ever to reach both 1,000 career points and 500 career assists.
In Pool (8.7 rpg, 5
th) and Hoskins (7.9, 8
th), Southeastern features two of the top rebounders in the Southland Conference, despite entering Saturday's contest with a minus-4.7 rebounding margin. Pool, who leads SLU with 10 double-doubles, ranks seventh in school history with 708 career rebounds.
Defensively, Southeastern is yielding a league-high 73.6 points per game. Pool has a team-high 32 blocks, while Hoskins leads the team with 40 steals. Styles, who is second on the team with 39 steals, is seventh in school history with 154 career steals.
UCA has won three of its last four games heading into Saturday. Sophomore guard Maggie Proffitt leads the Sugar Bears with 14.2 points per game, followed by junior guard Kendara Watts (11.5 ppg) and sophomore guard Brianna Mullins (10.8 ppg). Mullins also leads UCA with 5.2 rebounds per contest.
Southeastern is 7-10 all-time versus UCA. Back on Feb. 4, Proffitt scored a game-high 25 points on the way to a 60-48 Sugar Bear triumph in Hammond. Pool and Miller each had 11 points in the loss for SLU.
SLU will close out its regular season road slate on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at UNO. The game will be broadcast live in the Hammond area on KSLU-FM (90.9) and on the Internet at
www.LionSports.net, where live stats and live video, provided by UNO, will also be available.
