Lions' Rematch With Northwestern State Opens Southland Tourney

Southeastern won last two games against the Demons

CONWAY, Ark. – Southeastern Louisiana faces Northwestern State at 9 a.m. Wednesday in the opening game of the 2014 Southland Conference Baseball Tournament at Bear Stadium on the campus of the University of Central Arkansas.

Southeastern (33-23) and Northwestern State (31-24) meet for the fourth consecutive game after matching up in a three-game conference series to conclude the regular season this past weekend.

All of Southeastern's tournament games can be heard in the Hammond area on KSLU 90.9 FM, online and either the KSLU or TuneIn Radio smartphone apps. Fans can keep up with the tournament through live statistics or by following SLUathletics on Twitter.

Every game of the tournament, which the exception of the title game, will be streamed live on the Southland Conference Digital Network, which includes Southland.org and the league's free mobile and tablet apps. The title game will be available exclusively on on EPSN3.

Southeastern wrapped up the regular season with a pair of wins against the Demons at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.

Jameson Fisher (.395), the Southland's leading hitter, as well as conference newcomer of the year Andrew Godbold (.353), Brett Hoffman (.327) and Daniel Midyett (.300) lead Southeastern at the plate. Godbold's eight home runs are a team best and his 50 RBIs lead the conference. Brett Hoffman owns a team-high 16 doubles and his 39 RBIs are second-most on the ballclub. Jacob Williams' 13 stolen bases leads the team.

The Lions are hitting .291 as team and have been successful on 75-of-117 stolen base attempts, the most in the conference. Southeastern's pitching staff has compiled a 3.05 ERA, third-lowest in the Southland, fanning 369 batters in 492.2 innings pitched.

Junior right-hander Andro Čutura (9-2, 1.71) earns the start for the Lions to open the tournament, drawing freshman righty Adam Oller (6-1 2.18) for the Demons. Čutura did not face Northwestern State during the regular season while Oller earned a 4-2 win over Southeastern this past Thursday.

Chase Daughdrill (.319) and Cort Brinson (.301) lead Northwestern State in batting average. Brinson and Caleb Dugas have each hit a team-leading 12 doubles, while Nathan Lyons has hit a team-high four home runs. Daughdrill is the team RBI leader (38). Bret Underwood has swiped a team-best 17 bases.

The Demons are hitting .264 as a team and have been successful on 63-of-91 stolen base attempts. Northwestern State's pitching staff has compiled a 4.62 ERA, fanning 338 batters in 496.2 innings pitched.

The Southeastern-Northwestern State winner will face the winner of the Sam Houston State (40-15) - Lamar (31-23) contest Thursday at 4 p.m., while the loser of both games will face off at 9 a.m. Thursday in an elimination contest.

Anthony Azar (.369), the Southland Conference Player of the Year, as well as Colt Atwood (.326), Travis Lee (.304) and Corey Toups (.302) lead Sam Houston at the plate. Azar also leads the squad with nine home runs and 44 RBIs.

The Bearkats are hitting .289 as a team, leading the conference with 35 home runs, and have been successful on 46-of-58 stolen base attempts. Sam Houston's pitching staff has compiled a 2.81 ERA, second-lowest in the conference, fanning 316 batters in 490.2 innings pitched.

Sam Bumpers (.345), the conference's hitter of the year, as well as Jude Vidrine (.321), Brandon Provost (.311) and Kevin Santana (.302) lead Lamar at the plate. Bumpers has hit a team-high six home runs and Jacoby Middleton's 37 RBIs are a team best.

The Cardinals are hitting .288 as a team and have been successful on 50-of-72 stolen base attempts. Lamar's pitching staff has compiled a 3.57 ERA, fanning 312 batters in 486.2 innings pitched.

An all-tournament pass, which allows entry into all 15 possible games of the tournament, is $35 for adults and $25 for children ages 3-12. An adult single-day pass, which will include four games on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday with a possibility of three games on Saturday, is $14 each day, while a single-day pass for children is $10. If Saturday features only one game, then tickets for the championship will be $9 for adults and $7 for children. Students at Southland Conference institutions will also gain free admission with a valid student ID.
